Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

You'll adore this well-behaved plant with four seasons of interest! First Editions® Firedance™ Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Bailadeline') is a smaller, more compact garden shrub that meets the needs of urban gardeners! Colorful Firedance™ Dogwood has plenty of ornamental features to keep you interested every season of every year. Firedance™ Dogwood definitely brings the "wow" factor...and then some!

In spring, basil-green leaves make a perfect backdrop for the tender multitude of exquisite, clustered white flowers that cover the tips of the branches. These flowers are followed by pretty white berries which bring the neighborhood songbirds to your garden to sing in the summer.

With cool fall temperatures, the leaves turn to a rich reddish-purple in a riotous mix. If you plant these with chartreuse or yellow-leaved shrubs, you're in for a spectacular fall show to enjoy with your family and friends. With Firedance™ Dogwood, you'll even get to enjoy a special blaze of winter interest. After the leaves fall, young twigs and stems turn a bright red to heat up the winter landscape.

People grow showy and low-maintenance Firedance™ Dogwood hedges just to have twigs to harvest for Holiday floral arrangements! Don't worry about these versatile, durable shrubs...they are cold-hardy all the way up into Canada. Their roots tolerate being wet, but can handle periodically dry soils, too! Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 7, this is a fantastic sun-loving ornamental shrub!

Planting and Application:

It's not a surprise that these beautiful compact shrubs are perfectly happy in rich, well-drained garden soil. But they also work well in tough Rain Garden situations. Firedance™ is a modern cultivar of a native shrub and can put up with extreme cold and wet soils! Use near a pond or water feature, or as a slope stabilizer to hold soils in place!

You will be pleased by the amount of interest aroused by the nectar-rich clustered flowers. Use these lovely plants as a backdrop in a Butterfly Garden or mixed garden bed.

They are a nice height for a privacy screen behind seating areas. And because they grow lush and full all the way to the ground, you'll have no need for facer plants. Plant them three feet apart for a fast screen, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Stagger several rows for a very effective mass planting to fill an open area with flowers, berries, fall color, and ornamental winter interest. Add this pretty plant as a facer shrub to the sunny side of windbreaks or shelterbelts.

Even apartment dwellers can make the most of their balconies by simply growing them in resin containers. Try a few of them along the railing, and you'll create a private flowering bower to daydream and catch up on your newest summer novel.

  • Delicate White Flowers in Spring

#ProPlantTips for Care:

For the brightest winter stems, plant Firedance™ Dogwood in a sunny spot with at least six hours of sunlight. However, this adaptable shrub will tolerate partial shade, as well. Well-drained soil is preferred. However, once it's established in your soil, Firedance™ performs well in wet soils and those that remain periodically dry. Ensure it receives a moderate amount of water regularly for best results.

Mulch with a layer 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy to ensure the root stays cool in the hot summer. Increase water during dry extreme heat. In fall, prune the beautiful red stems for your Holiday containers or renewal prune your shrub by trimming out only the thick, old stems down to ground level every 3-5 years.

  • Loves Full Sun but Can Grow in Partial Shade
  • Adaptable to Wet & Dry Soils
  • Can Grow in Wet or Dry Conditions
  • Seldom Damaged by Deer & Extraordinarily Cold Hardy
  • Low Maintenance - Little Pruning Needed In Late Winter/Early Spring
