Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best fiery red fall color, plant in full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct light daily. While it handles partial shade well, the foliage will often stay more greenish or dull maroon rather than turning that signature bright scarlet.
  • Soil: This shrub thrives in well-drained soil but is famously adaptable to various types. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost at planting to help with drainage, as "wet feet" or standing water can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Burning Bush deeply twice a week to help the root system move beyond the planting hole. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during extreme heat can lead to scorched leaf edges or premature leaf drop. Think of deep watering as an insurance policy for that vibrant autumn display.

Pruning Tips

Because this plant is grown for its foliage rather than flowers, pruning is very flexible, but it is best done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. You can shear it into a formal hedge or use "renewal pruning" by removing the oldest, thickest canes at ground level to encourage fresh, vigorous stems. Regular thinning allows more light into the center, preventing the inner branches from becoming bare and "leggy."

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release "tree and shrub" fertilizer in early spring just as the buds begin to swell. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or early fall. Doing so forces the plant to produce tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost, making the tips susceptible to winter kill.

Stunning red fall color, the Tures Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus 'Tures') is a nice uniformly-shaped selection of Euonymus with a stunning red fall color! The Tures variety of Burning Bush is a large growing shrub with a very rounded shape. Tucked among the green spring and summer foliage are dainty little yellowish blossoms that the bees and butterflies will seek out.

But then your Tures Burning Bush will begin to redden in August, achieving its full fiery splendor in September. It will hold its leaves until well into the fall and during this time you will notice the very attractive red fruit that the birds will appreciate as the weather turns cold.

Although the Tures Burning Bush resembles the Compacta Burning Bush it has larger, showier "corky" wings on its stems giving it a much more dramatic appearance in the winter. The Tures also displays a more brilliant scarlet - almost fluorescent - fall color!

Planting and Application:

Tures is an excellent choice for hedges, screens, mass planting, or as a focal point in a garden bed or naturalized woodland area for a splash of eye-catching color. Why not use a pair flanking on either side of the entrance to an outdoor dining area? Or try a curved hedge or screen around your outdoor fire pit and entertainment area for privacy.

Make sure to use it someplace where you can enjoy its dramatic display. Even a single shrub planted as a specimen in the front yard would stop traffic and boost your home's curb appeal. Tures can also hold its own as an ornamental focal point in the landscape!

You can imagine how impactful this plant would be in a commercial setting! People will know just where your business is, and the Burning Bush will become a natural landmark feature. Try several plants in a mass planting for greater impact!

This plant takes well to shearing and can be kept at any size to suit your landscape needs. However, if not pruned at all, the shrub develops a natural-looking profile, with horizontal branches sweeping out and down a bit at the tips.

We always recommend allowing plenty of space for your shrubs to develop into their full mature height and spread. You'd hate to have to destroy the pretty outline by severe pruning for size control.

  • Lush Geen Leaves & Mid-Sized Round Form
  • Yellow Flowers & Red Winter Fruit
  • Brilliant Red Fall Color
  • Pollinator-Friendly & Wildlife Interest
  • Showy Hedge, Privacy Screen, Specimen & General Landscape Workhorse

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The Tures Burning Bush is an adaptable shrub that can thrive in a variety of soils as well as full sun to partial shade. Requiring very well-drained soil and moderate yet regular moisture, these are very tough deciduous shrubs! Top off the soil with 3 to 4 inches of arborist mulch, to keep the root system cool and moist. Very cold hardy, Burning Bushes feature quite a few fantastic resistances and tolerances including pollution, pests or disease, and they are seldom bothered by deer!

If you do prune, do so right after flowering to remove the potential of the berries that birds eat and can disperse throughout the environment. Because of this seed dispersal, sometimes Euonymus can grow a bit too well in some areas of the country and cannot be shipped there to protect the native flora. Nature Hills uses Plant Sentry™ to remain compliant with all State and Federal Agricultural regulations.

  • Full Sun & Some Part Shade
  • Best in Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune After Flowering To Remove Seeds
  • Pollution, Deer, Insect & Disease-Resistant

The Tures Burning Bush is a wonderful addition to any landscape for its symmetrical shape, unique bark, and incredible fall color! Order yours today at Nature Hills!
