Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 6-9
Use the silvery-variegated Silver King Wintercreeper Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus 'Silver King') as a very useful, showy workhorse. Let it add stunning color and texture to your landscape. Oval, glossy green leaves feature varying creamy white to silvery-white irregular margins.
With cool-toned, irregular white margins on glossy green leaves, you'll never grow tired of this elegant, year-round display! The natural growth is an upright vase shape in the early years, then it mounds naturally. It stays full and dense all the way to the ground.
Wintercreeper Euonymus has small greenish flowers in the spring that attract pollinators! By fall, Silver King produces small round pink or red capsules that split open to expose the red-orange seeds much like a Bittersweet Vine. The birds will adore these seeds, but they can become a part of the problem in some states.
This species of plant and its cultivars may be invasive in some areas in some Eastern states. Nature Hills has developed Plant Sentry™, our very own compliance software that will not allow the sale or shipment of any plant that your state has prohibited from being purchased and grown where it is restricted.
Type in your zip code in our Zone Finder above the Plant Highlights to see if we can ship into your area. If we can safely ship to you, you'll grow to appreciate the low-maintenance nature of Silver King. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 9, these taller shrubs grow 6-7 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide!
Landscape Application:
Rely on foliage plants to create the foundation of a low-maintenance landscape. Spend time planning your design to take full advantage of the natural features of your yard.
Spotlight a sloped hill, make the most of mature trees, and draw your guest's eyes to the patio, or accent offset, modern architecture! Even a wall can become a wonderful garden feature. There are many ways to get the most from your investment in Silver King.
Try them in large outdoor containers to decorate your porch, patio, balcony, or deck. Plant two as a pair, flanking either side of your front door. Use one to beautify a bare space between windows.
Silver King Wintercreeper is a perfect size for an evergreen hedge or privacy screen. The close-knit branch structure allows Silver King to become a very effective privacy screen. Use a row in your side yard, or one or two planted strategically to hide unattractive views. They make marvelous living walls of a garden room. Entertain like royalty in an open-air outdoor dining room.
Grow them in the ground, even in your toughest spots. It's certainly dramatic enough to be a focal point, but partners well with other shrubs in a mixed planting. Silver King takes shearing very well and can be grown as a formal hedge or fanciful topiary. When sheared, you'll trim off the inconspicuous blooms and fall berries.
Prune them into amusing topiary columns, cones, or curlicues as a formal ornamental exclamation point. Or, let them become a freeform "living sculpture" with incredible variegated foliage. Trim them tightly, or leave them alone to grow naturally. Either way, they'll look dazzling in the available light.
Create a memorable experience with espalier plantings. Study our blog on small space gardening to learn how to prune it flat to a flat wall or trellis. Silver King is one of the best shrubs to use for the ancient, decorative art of Espalier pruning.
Plant them four feet apart on center to create a solid hedge. Measure from the center of the first plant to the center of the next. Plant en masse or repeat them as a wonderful backdrop to flowering plants in a perennial or shrub border. Be sure to snip branches to use as a filler in cut flower arrangements.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Silver King shines in sun or partial shade, and you'll want to give it at least four hours of sunshine for the best coloration. Silver King makes an excellent plant for hot, dry climates. It thrives in poor soils, and won't lose leaf color in direct sun.
Well-drained soil is best, in fact, Silver King does very well in rocky, thin soil without much preparation at all. They'll handle poor soil and Euonymus are water-wise once their roots are established in your soil.
We do recommend mulching the root system with a three-inch layer. Pull the mulch back six inches from the stems. For the first season, apply a medium amount of water on a regular schedule. Let the surrounding area become saturated, to encourage the growth of a deep root system. Container-grown plants need consistent supplemental water their entire life.
Prune in early spring to shape or keep it smaller. You can even train it up as a tree-form, or shear into a geometric topiary for an architectural accent. Keep it tightly manicured, or give it a light shaping. Try it in different ways in subsequent years. You might be surprised to find you prefer a looser look. Silver King is a durable plant. It can be grown in pollution, and urban environments and can tolerate salty shore conditions.
