Growing Zones 5-8
The big and bold Manhattan Euonymus (Euonymus kiautschovicus 'Manhattan') is a lush, green, fast-growing form of Wintercreeper that might remind you of a Boxwood but on steroids! Rounded, shiny green leaves stay on the plant year-round as it is a broadleaf evergreen, even down into hardiness zone 5!
Left untrimmed, they get 6 feet in height and about 6 feet across very quickly. They grow branches all the way to the ground, so won't get "leggy" at the bottom! Spring brings tiny little blossoms that native bees seek out these tiny blooms that in the fall, become pinkish fruit capsules the birds will snap up.
Highly adaptable relatives of Wintercreepers, these shrubs are salt-tolerant, that thrive through roadside 'hell strips', or in coastal areas without problems! Urban-pollution tolerant, there are few places where these hardy shrubs won't grow!
Planting and Application:
Great alternatives to, and growing twice as fast as a Boxwood, use this as a robust growing hedge. A Manhattan hedge will also make a great natural backdrop for a colorful shrub border as well. They also make incredible specimen plants that can be sheared into a pyramid or even trained along a wall. These shrubs are even tall enough to be the walls themselves, enveloping and screening off outdoor garden rooms in seclusion!
Manhattan can be sheared more formally, left to grow naturally, and kept at most any size if you like! They make excellent formal hedges that can be used as a backdrop to your Perennial, Rock Garden, or Rose garden!
Line your property line with these year-round greenery ornamentals and watch the birds flit between the dense branching to shelter and nest while giving you and your yard a private respite from the noisy prying world outside!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
They can be grown in full sun through full shade which opens the door to many uses in the landscape. There are not many plants that can be grown successfully in either sun or shade. Plant in any kind of well-drained soil that won't get soggy. New plants need a regular water schedule but once established, Euonymus can be quite hardy and tolerate short periods of drought. Consider adding a layer of mulch around your plant and Nature Hills Root Booster for lifelong root support.
In zone 5, you should be careful to keep the plants sited out of western and northern exposed winter winds, and a fall regiment of anti-desiccant. A good long drink before winter helps keep them from drying out. Manhattan is shallow-rooted and will love additional moisture in hotter regions during the growing season to keep it happy. Prune or shear after flowering as needed!
- Thrives in Full Sun or Partial Shade
