A new and improved traditional street tree! The Regal Elm Tree (Ulmus x 'Regal') brings back the shaded boulevard! Regal features large, dark-green glossy leaves that casts luscious shade over your home and garden! It has an upright character, transplants well, and will tolerate a wide range of conditions!
The Regal Elm is a fast-growing tree that develops a strong central leader with an upright or columnar growth habit when young, becoming more ovate with age. Its leaves are dark green all summer until the autumn when your tree will burst into a lovely yellow hue!
This Hybrid Elm is a University of Wisconsin introduction, Regal was developed from a cross between the Smooth Leaf Elm and the Dutch Elm, resulting in an Elm that is considered highly resistant to DED (Dutch Elm disease) and Verticillium Wilt. Heat and cold-hardy, Regal thrives throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 7!
How to Use The Regal Elm in the Landscape
This Hybrid Elm is a fantastic urban tree since it is disease and pest-resistant and tolerates pollution. It has proved very tolerant of hot and arid conditions, exhibiting minimal leaf scorch!
This makes Regal Elms good street trees because the Regal Elm tolerates typical roadside conditions and occasional salt. Keep in mind that planting an Elm tree too near your sidewalks and other paved areas can lead to cracks and lifted concrete.
The lush shade and large leaves (for an Elm) reduce your home's cooling costs in the summer, and create long-lived specimen lawn plantings, groves, and bird-friendly groupings! If you have the room, create a park-like setting with collections of Elms mixed with other deciduous and evergreen trees and feel like your seating areas are in an arboretum!

#ProPlantTips for Care
This Hybrid Elm is highly adaptable to many well-drained soils and does best in full sun. It will need at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Once established, Regal becomes adaptable to alkaline soil, and draining clay soil. These are hardy trees that only need regular water during their first year or so in the ground but can become tolerant of dry sites, occasional drought, occasional flooding, and road salt.
Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting. This time-tested formula includes mycorrhizal fungus to create a symbiotic relationship with tiny feeder roots. Give your tree this support for optimal access to water and soil nutrients...forever!
Support your tree and keep it stress-free by providing supplemental moisture during prolonged drought and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around its entire root system. Prune to correct growth and remove broken branches in the late winter or very early spring.
