The Ellis Pecan Tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Ellis') is a big, sturdy, impressive specimen that not only makes an impact from its sheer heft and profile but gives you bushels of delectable nuts every growing season! Having a medium-thickness shell, these nuts transport and store wonderfully!

We love Ellis because it doesn't have to be fully grown to produce its bevy of nuts! Producing at a very young age, especially for a Pecan Tree, and it produces a lot! We're talking 43 nuts per pound on average! Think about that when you're weighing your next Pecan purchase at the neighborhood market.

Ellis Pecan trees are Type II trees and will need a Type I tree, like Pawnee, Oconee, or Desirable Pecans, to assist with pollination. Ellis grows from 75 - 100 feet tall, and this doesn't happen overnight, so you can grow it in your suburban backyard knowing it will be a generation before it towers over your house.

Named for Marvin Ellis who bought a Pecan grove in Georgia in 1944. In 1978 his son, Elliot Ellis, helped him open a retail market and gift store on the property and talked him into going into the mail-order business. In 2018 Elliot and his sons patented their family Pecan Tree and have made it available to home gardeners everywhere. And we are so glad they did!

Planting and Application:

Wildlife enjoys these nuts as much as you will, so get ready to fight off a few squirrels. Birds love basking in the shade and nesting in the strong branches. Use these mighty trees as shade and cooling bill-reducing plantings and enjoy a seating area or patio cooled by its fine foliage. Grow as fantastic windbreaks and shelterbelts, and lumber once mature. Pecan trees are beacons for wildlife because of their broad-reaching shelter and food sources.

You'll love the edible landscaping possibilities these lovely nut trees provide! Create nut groves or food-sustainable orchards in your backyard by grouping Ellis with other Trees. Pecans are delectable and healthy sources of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. You'll have bushels of them to use in all your favorite baking and candy-making recipes, pies, salads, and snacking needs!

  • Excellent Quality & Flavor Nuts
  • High Yields of Medium-Thickness Shelled Nuts
  • Type II Pecan Needs Type I Pollinator
  • Precocious - Produces Early In Age
  • Tall Shade, Wildlife & Specimen Lawn Tree
  • Great For Home or Commercial Growers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Pecan trees enjoy full sun and well-drained soil. Water new trees regularly, just enough regular water to get established, but once settled they rarely need supplemental watering. Prune in late winter or early spring if needed. Situate your tree in the right location for years of enjoyment with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch that greatly benefits the root system through heat, chill, and drought.

  • Full Sun
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Water At First
  • Prune in Winter
  • Long-Lived Large Root Systems
  • Scab Resistant Trees

As pecan growers for the past 75 years, the Ellis family knows a thing or two about good pecans. They wouldn't put their family name on an inferior tree. Trust them and NatureHills.com - this is a tree worth having in your backyard!
