Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

The perfect Pecan pie awaits! Can't you smell it? That delicious, warm pecan pie scent comes from your grandma's kitchen at Thanksgiving. If you grew up anywhere in the Southeast, then you know what we're talking about! As good as your grandma's pie recipe is, though, it gets even better when it's made from fresh pecans you picked from your very own trees!
The Elliot Pecan Tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Elliott') is the most widely grown specialty Pecan tree in the South and is easily recognized by its smooth mottled shell and distinctive teardrop shape. While the spring catkins won't attract butterflies and bees, the Pecan tree is a vital Host Plant for 231 species of Lepidoptera larvae, including the Luna Moth and many varieties of Silkmoths.
First discovered in the early 1900s as a seedling in Henry Elliot's front yard in a small town in Florida, this tree grew quickly in popularity. Fantastic edible landscaping trees, the buttery, hickory flavor of these nuts makes them popular to serve as hors d'oeuvres or to usel in specialty snacks and desserts!
Planting and Application:
In addition to their healthful and delicious crop of nuts, Pecan trees are incredible shade trees too! The compound leaves and dense canopy cast cooling shade over your seating areas, and patios, and save you money during the summer when home cooling costs can be outrageous!
The lush green, broad canopy, and tall form make Elliot a lovely lawn tree that stands out with a ring of mulch around its bases to protect the bark from mechanical damage during lawn maintenance. The yellow fall color and strong limbs are perfect in a windbreak or shelterbelt, housing a ton of wildlife within their embrace!
Elliot is a Type II Pecan tree and will have the best harvest with a Type I pollination partner like the Desirable, Oconee or Pawnee Pecan. Create nut groves of multiple varieties to ensure the best possible harvest and extended harvest season possible! Elliot Pecans are typically ripe late in the season between November to February depending on your climate.
- Great Buttery Hickory Flavor
- Lush Green Compound Foliage
- Green Catkins & Smooth Mottled Teardrop Shaped Nuts
- Wildlife & Pollinator Value
- Type II Pecan Tree - Needs Type I Pollinator
- Lawn & Shade Trees - Huge Harvest Of Late-Season Nuts
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6-9, Elliot is a reliable producer in full sun and well-drained enriched soils. Provide new trees with consistent moisture and once established, only occasional supplemental waterings are needed during the harshed droughts. A 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch goes a long way to keep your tree roots cool and moist. Prune in late winter or early spring.
Commercial growers love Elliot Pecans because they are drought tolerant, scab resistant and have very consistent nut size and production!
- Full Sun Trees
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Yet Regular Moisture
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune When Dormant
- Drought-Tolerant & Scab-Resistant
You can be sure to get a good harvest of great nuts and amazing Pecan pies from Elliot Pecan Tree every year! But don't take our word for it - buy one today from Nature Hills and see for yourself!
