Eldorado Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Eldorado') is a shorter-growing but wide-spreading Ornamental grass with tall waving seed heads that can react 4-5 feet in height! Featuring gold and green variegated blades, these grasses shine in the sun!

Perennial Ornamental Grasses like Eldorado have fantastic upright texture and waving motion all growing season long! The 3-5 foot wide clumps are fast-growing, forming airy seed heads in the summer.

Starting as a soft mauve-purple and turning a lovely botanical tan, the graceful plumes add a mist-like texture to the garden border. The blooms are also popular as cut flowers and really make a great complement to a mixed-cut flower arrangement.

A selection of 'Karl Foerster', this exciting Feather Reed Grasses are cold and heat-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, and the blades turn tan for the fall and winter, then still standing strong through the snow for winter interest! In more mild climates, you will miss out on the golden fall color but still enjoy the green blades!

Planting and Application:

Eldorado is a tidy ornamental that won't get into trouble in the garden border! A tall prairie grass or focal point that commands attention! The waving seed heads create feathery clouds as backdrops and back-of-the-border accents, inviting you to stop and watch them sway in the slightest breeze.

Encircle a meditation nook or outdoor reading chair with mixed grasses so their rustling blades and swaying motion help calm the mind and soothe the senses. Feather Reed Grasses are tough plants and thrive in the sun garden! Filling large swaths with fine-textured blades, growing into large clumps that make mass plantings easy!

Hardy enough to add grace to Rock Gardens, and with tough root systems to hold soil in place! Eroding slopes, embankments, and hard-to-mow hillsides become waving seas of green and gold. Add upright texture to your foundation, beef up a shelterbelt or hedge, or create a screening hedge with these fast-growing plants!

  • Purplish Airy Seed Heads In Summer
  • Green & Gold Variegated Blades
  • Upright & Large Spreading Sized Perennial Grass
  • Winter Interest & Graceful Motion
  • Tall Accents, Waving Specimens, Easy En Masse Plantings & Rock Gardens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Feather Reed Ornamental Grasses are full sun perennials, and anything less will make them flop and have less variegation. Plants must have well-drained soil and moderate yet regular moisture for new plants, but once established, these plants are drought-tolerant water-wise perennials! Include a 3 to 4-inch layer of mulch to keep roots cool and cut down on surface evaporation.

Prune back your grasses in the late winter or very early spring when you see the beginnings of some new green growth. Because these are cool-season grasses, they can grow fantastic during the cooler parts of the growing season, but slow down in the heat of the summer.
