Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.
Young Plants (6 months to 18 months old)
Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Your vine is growing what? The Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia durior) is an unusual ornamental perennial vine with enormous bright green heart-shaped leaves and long vining tendrils of dark green stems! But what really will amaze you are the blooms! The greenish-yellow blooms with burgundy tops look like curved little pipes!
The speckled blooms have a yellow throat and, like the similar-looking carnivorous Pitcher Plant, call flies with their stinky aroma to pollinate the blooms. Talk about unique! Readily climbing any trellis or fence and arbor, you'll quickly gain a unique specimen plant that will have everyone talking!
Dutchman's Pipe is also a beneficial plant for the Swallowtail Butterfly, providing food for its larvae; while offering up protection and food for other pollinators! The late spring blooms continue through summer and can be evergreen in warmer growing zones. Northern gardeners can move these plants into a sunny greenhouse to protect them from the cold.
Planting and Application:
Dutchman's Pipe is a certain conversation starter! Just don't plant it too close to your backyard seating areas or by your front door, you may have visitors turning up their noses! Definitely plant it on a garden arbor or obelisk, or as a front yard specimen where it is sure to attract attention … from afar. Let ramble over an awning or arch to provide lush shade and even privacy.
Pipe Vine can also be used in containers as vertical, climbing elements, or let sprawl over an unsightly fence for some fairly fast coverage. Loving any location that is protected and away from the full sun, a Rain Garden's edge or a moist shady garden bed in need of some vertical height and interest will welcome this curious vine!
- Vigorous Growth - Woody Vining Plant
- Succulent Green Heart-Shaped Leaves
- Unusual Burgundy & Green Speckled Blooms
- Containers & Climbs Arbors, Trellis & Fences
- Swallowtail Butterfly Host Plant & Unique Specimen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Aristolochia does well in full sun in cooler climates where it can be grown as an annual or brought into a greenhouse for the winter. Evergreen flowering vine in warmer growing zones, any consistently moist, protected, partial shade area is perfect for these perennials.
- Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Moist Soil - Mulch Well
- Enriched, Well-Drained Soil & Fertilize Regularly
- Prune in Late Winter or Early Spring
