Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 5-7
Add this top performer as a wonderful backdrop to your summer activities. Clumping Dragon Head Bamboo (Fargesia rufa) stays put and gives you an easy-care, tropical look with ease! You'll be thrilled to soon see fresh, bright orange-red shoots in spring. The shoots age to a mid-tone green and quickly grow to achieve full size each season.
With arching canes that quickly grow tall, Dragon Head Bamboo is a confident accent plant. Bamboo is a fantastic fast-growing screening plant that puts up 6-10 feet of height and spreads into airy clumps 6-8 feet wide. The undersides of each leaf are a different hue so as they flutter you can enjoy a delightful two-tone effect!
Add a graceful accent to your garden sanctuary with the feathery, arching growth. It won't take long for this speedy plant to give you a mature, established look! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 7, these vigorous clumping, spreading plants won’t get into trouble in your landscape like some other forms of Bamboo!
Planting and Application:
There are many applications for these special plants. Add just one as a specimen behind a meaningful piece of garden art. This is a terrific choice to use behind patio furniture or as a backdrop to your landscape beds and borders. Run a row of Bamboo between a fence and a path or sidewalk for a lovely rustling journey along the skinny side of your home or garden!
Not only is Clumping Bamboo a must-have for Meditation gardens and Asian-inspired garden areas, but also looks great around the Pool or outdoor seating areas! Relax nearby and enjoy the play of the breeze through your stand.
Use it in a row to create wonderful "Living Walls" to support your outdoor activities. Create fast hedges and property division to hide a messy or nosy neighbor or those more utilitarian landscape aspects!
Clumping Bamboo works beautifully in planters and containers so even balcony gardeners and decks can enjoy pinpoint screening and privacy. Add casters to your planters and create rolling screening that moves where you need it most!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This plant is easy to care for and grows nearly anywhere in full sun or shaded conditions. It needs well-drained soil, so create a raised planting bed if you suffer from poor drainage. It's best to avoid the hottest places in your landscape for the best performance. Water carefully to establish, and provide supplemental water during long periods of drought from then on. Prune once a year in late winter before new growth appears. Chop the dried shoots and use them as garden mulch in your other garden beds, or add them to your compost pile.
- Grows in Full Sun to Part Shade
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moist to Average Watering Needs
- Prune Back Early Spring
- Easy Care & Low-Maintenance
