Growing Zones 9-10
Kick back and enjoy smelling the sweet peppery perfume of your dramatic Double Blooming Red Freesia (Freesia x hybrida 'Red') on a steamy summer porch or patio! The unique bright red flowers appear in spires with the flowers all growing upright off the stems, each taking their turn to bloom from bottom to tip. Giving you a long-lasting season of bloom starting in the late spring!
Red Double Freesia is a favorite of florists with its incredibly captivating double petaled red blooms! As cut flowers, they last an impressive length of time in the vase and scent your home with spicy sweet fragrance. Outdoors, Hummingbirds and pollinators flock to the brilliant color and their ample nectar resource!
Double Freesia are considered summer-flowering bulbs, known as corms, which grow quickly to a 1-2 foot tall clump over time and can spread up to 2 feet wide. Warm winter areas throughout USDA growing zones 9 and 10 allows these plants to act as perennial bulbs and form clumps of green swords and bright red blooms.
Landscape Application:
Create groupings of Double Flowering Freesia in your garden beds to maximize the brilliant color of these blooms and the gentle fringe-like effect of the foliage. They do beautifully in a vase as well as containers and your garden beds and borders! Add to sun gardens as gorgeous red edging, as crimson ribbons of late-spring color, or as pretty green edging once the flowers fade.
Pot up Double Red Freesia in larger mixed planters or as a solo feature with multiple Freesia clustered together for a beautiful display on sunny porches and patios! Bringing the scent closer to your seating areas and outdoor garden rooms! Anywhere they go, pollinators follow. These plants can be forced indoors and brighten your winter months. Don't forget to give these as vivid gifts!
Because there are numerous buds per stalk that open consecutively from base to tip, they have a long-lasting presence anywhere. Red Freesia is year-round hardy throughout USDA growing zones 9 and 10, but are often used as annual accents, houseplants, gifts and container plants in all growing zones.
- Double Layer Of Fiery Red Blooms
- Fountain-Like Long Sword-Like Greenery
- Spicy Peppery Sweet Scent!
- Great For Bouquets & Pollinator-Friendly
- Edging, Groupings, Front Garden Border Accents & Containers
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Double Freesia blooms profusely in the summer and won't disappoint you! Freesia grows best in full sun but handles some afternoon shade in hotter climates, and are easy to grow in sandy, loamy, average, moist well-drained soil.
Plant about 2 inches deep with the pointed end up, spaced about 6 inches apart. The corms multiply and will naturalize in USDA growing zones 9 and 10. Provide moderate fertility and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the soils surface.
Northern gardeners In USDA planting zones 1-8 can use Freesia as annuals for seasonal container or garden accents, or bring them in for the winter as houseplants. You can also treat these corms as you would Canna and Dahlia, and lift your plants in the fall before a hard frost but after they've gone dormant. Deadhead after flowers fade but keep the leaves so they can make food for the bulb, then trim the leaves down when they turn yellow.
