Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 2-8
Big fluffy pompoms of color, the gorgeous Double Pink Hollyhock (Alcea 'Double Pink') features varying shades of deep pink for an ombre effect from top to bottom as the florets bloom from bottom to top of the tall and strong stems!
And we're talking tall! Up to 4-8 feet tall! Backed by a rosette of textured green leaves, the frilly double blooms of Double Pink attract a wide range of pollinators as they try to squeeze between the tightly packed petals! Snip back these flowering stems once they fade and enjoy a rebloom until frost!
Hollyhocks are incredibly cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 8, these biennial plants start as low-growing rosettes of leaves that send up tall stems their second year. Fast growing, you'll not wait long for the tall spires of incredible blossoms!
Planting and Application:
Alcea is a wonderful plant near the back of the border, working great along walls or fences! Holding their ruffled florets tall for pollinators and up calling all the attention. The gorgeous pink blooms look great among Cottage gardens and Pollinator borders, as well as cutting gardens.
Double Pink Hollyhocks are great garden anchors and add height to the landscape! Try rows or groupings to get the biggest impact throughout the sun garden!
- Ombre Raspberry/Plum to White Blooms
- Tall Flowering Stems With Multiple Buds Each
- Pollinator & Hummingbird Favorites
- Summer Blooms & Reblooms Til Fall
- Back of the Border Specimens, Garden Anchors & Focal Points
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Hollyhocks are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area, plus need moderate regular moisture during the worst of the heat and summer sun. Deadhead as soon as the flowers fade and remove seedpods to clean up the tall stems if you wish. In the event of strong winds and storms, you can stake these tall flowering stems to protect them. Each fall you can remove the leaves and stems, trimming down to a couple inches above the ground and mulching the crowns for the winter.
