Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Double Peony Tulips do their very best in a well-drained location in full to partial sun. Tulips do not like continuously wet soil so water newly planted bulbs very well and you shouldn't have to water again unless it gets very dry that fall, or during summers when you have extensive heat and drought. Top-dress with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to hold in soil moisture more consistently and to insulate the perennial bulbs.
Deadhead the flower heads once they fade but let the foliage remain to make food for the bulbs. Trim away the leaves and remove them from the area once they turn yellow. Apply an early spring application of bulb food.
Tips on Planting Tulip Bulbs
Plant your Tulip Bulbs in the fall about 6 to 8 weeks before a hard freeze (or anytime in the autumn when the ground is still workable.). Place the bulbs in a hole with the pointy end upward and at least 8 inches deep (about 3x the length of the bulb), spaced about 4-6 inches apart.
- Full Sun/Part Shade Outdoors & Indirect Sun Indoors
- Needs Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate to Low Moisture Once Established
- Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune After Foliage Yellows
- Fall-Planted Perennial Spring Flowering Bulbs
