Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Ground hardy perennials throughout USDA planting zones 9 to 10, northern growers and seasonal container gardeners can enjoy Freesia as annual accents or treat the bulbs as you would Canna Lily, lifting the bulbs in fall and storing them safely over the winter months in a cool, dark place.
Planting and Application:
Enjoy sitting on your patio or deck and smelling the sweet perfume scent of your Freesia Double Mix on a hot summer evening! Loving the sun, the sweet and spicy, almost peppery fragrance from these showy and elegant flowers fills the air and drifts on the breeze as you sip summer spritzers and iced tea!
This plant is a favorite of florists with its bright, happy colors! As cut flowers, they last an impressive length of time in the vase. They look as beautiful in a vase as they do in containers and planters, or dabbling throughout your mixed perennial border and Cut Flower gardens.
Double-flowered Freesia prefers plenty of warmth and humidity so planting them along your foundation, along sunny pathways and sidewalks, or around the pool will be the perfect spot to keep them happy!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Freesia bulbs are easy to grow in sandy, loamy, average, moist well-drained soil with full sun. Blooming starts in late spring on green sword-like foliage that makes for quite a dramatic effect even when the plant is not in flower! You will want to find your warm, full sun spots in your garden for planting Freesia. Provide moderate moisture, but too much will rot these bulbs.
Freesias are excellent annuals and will flower about 10-12 weeks after planting, so you can stagger planting to extend the blooming times during the season. The bulbs can be lifted at the end of the season and stored dormant above freezing until the following spring.
Deadhead after the flowers fade, sometimes encouraging a rebloom, but leave the foliage to make food for the bulbs. Then once the leaves yellow, trim back to the ground.
- Full Sun Perennial Bulb Plants
- Fast Growing in Fertile Well-Drained Soil
- Appreciates Mulched Beds & Regular Moisture
- Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune Foliage When It Yellows
- Deer & Rabbit Seldom Bother These
