Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 5-11
Lush landscape filler and hardy native, Deer Grass is prized by growers for its resistance to the deer population! making it an ideal Ornamental Grass choice for cover in areas where deer are a problem. Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) is very attractive and is a great element for adding interest to your property without all the fuss, watering, and maintenance.
Much like Pampas Grass, Deer Grass is a hardy type of grass that develops gorgeous, showy plumes, often rising up to 2 feet or more above its dense clump of finely textured, spiky upright blades. This tufted foliage features narrow, pointy leaves that range in color from purple to light silvery green. Maturing to a nice 3-4 foot tall clump that can spread 4-5 feet wide!
Unlike Pampas Grass, however, Deer Bunchgrass has no sharp edges, so when you go to cut it back in the fall or winter, your hands will thank you for choosing the Deer Grass variety! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 11, you also won't see the aggressive seeding with Deer Grass that you might expect from Pampas Grass.
Planting and Application:
Considered to be one of the easiest warm-season Ornamental Grasses to grow among all the native Bunchgrasses, Deer Grass requires minimal green thumb power to survive and thrive. It adapts easily and readily to most soil conditions, although rocky and sandy soil seems to be its preference. Use as a backdrop to wildflower and pollinator gardens, around a pool seating area for seasonal screening, or as a tall back-of-the-border plant in the Rock Garden.
This Grass makes a beautiful addition to a driveway, street edge, or dry stream beds on your property, and it grows fast, maturing to its adult height in two seasons or less. Cover large areas en masse for easy-breezy fill and cover large areas of ground on hillsides and slopes where erosion and water runoff are an issue. Wildlife and birds will love the cover and flit from mound to mound when you plant Deer Grass in masses or in groupings.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Ornamental Grasses like this prefer full sun, but Deer Grass can also tolerate some partial shade but plan on slower growth. Plant in well-drained soil of any type, as easy-care Deer Grass becomes well-established, it is drought-tolerant and requires little in the way of watering. Prune this warm-season grass back hard each spring and have patience while it greens up, typically showing growth later in the spring, only to shine throughout the summer and fall instead.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs - Xeric Native
- Any Well-Drained Soil - Preferring Rocky/Sandy Soils
- Prune Back in Early Spring
- Easy To Grow & Low Maintenance
Whether you are living in Deer Country or not, Deer Grass will fill the landscape with easy-care hardiness, and tall vertical interest all growing season! Hurry and order your new garden backbones at NatureHills.com!
