The improved Crimson-Spot Rock Rose (Cistus ladanifer) is a modern take on an age-old flowering ornamental. In mild climates, it will stay green all year! The foliage smells delicious, so plant it where the wind will carry that scent into your home. This is an incredibly hardy broadleaf evergreen with big, striking white blooms that pollinators are grateful for!
In the spring, it blooms dozens of huge, pure white flowers. Each bloom boasts a canary-yellow central eye and, as the name suggests, a striking crimson spot at the base of each petal! It looks clean and bright, with a whole lot of pizazz!
Spaniards have loved this plant since ancient days when it was called Labdanum and the scented sap was used as perfume! It's very hardy, and nearly pest and disease-free. Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 6-9 there is little that fazes this tough evergreen shrub! Salt tolerance reigns true as one of the most useful aspects of hardiness on display alongside this plant's beautiful opalescent blooms. Coastal gardens are sure to benefit from the hardy addition of this fine shrub.
Planting and Application:
Use Crimson-Spot as a big, flowering hedge in sunny, dry gardens. This easy-care nature makes it a natural for use on rocky slopes, in Rock Gardens, and in Xeric landscapes beautifully! Those hard-to-mow slopes, eroding hillsides, and sun-drenched stretches of ground become landscape focal points with these hardy rounded shrubs!
With a faster growth rate, you'll get results in a hurry! Fill garden backdrops and mid-sized hedges with fast year-round screening, bulk up a foundation border, or fill in a mixed shrub border with steady greenery! Rock Rose shrubs, sometimes spelled as one word Rockrose are one of the best plants for weed suppression! Plant anywhere you want a pretty accent, sun-tolerant living groundcover in groupings, rows, or as en masse feature plantings! Even commercial landscapes benefit from these flowering evergreen shrubs!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Handling sun all day long, don't bother watering these Xeric shrubs all that often (or even at all!) once they are established, but until then some regular moisture is appreciated. While naturally hardy, soil selection can be an important part of keeping your Rock Rose happy and healthy. Avoid poor-drainage soils that retain lots of water to avoid killing roots. Clay soil-tolerant, and dry, rocky, sandy conditions won't faze these plants, but Rock Rose is sure to benefit from 3-4 inches of arborist mulch. Rock Rose bushes may need the occasional pruning or shearing, but just be sure to perform this task right after flowering.
- Full Sun

Crimson-Spot Rockrose Ancient Past
When you think of perfume what flowers come to mind? Rose? Lavender? Lilac? What about Labdanum? Not the first thing to roll off the tongue, huh?
Labdanum is the resin that gives perfumes their amber, woody, musky, or leathery scents. It has been used as a scent for a very long time. How long? We find it mentioned in Genesis in the Bible.
It's also thought by Egyptologists that the little false beards the royal Egyptians wore were made of labdanum.
For an interesting cocktail party story, you can tell how labdanum was collected.
Sheep were allowed to graze in ancient fields of rockrose. Their fur would fill with the sticky labdanum resin that came off of the slender leaves. Then the shepherds would brush it out of their coats and make a little extra cash on the side selling it to merchants and perfumers.
Today? You'll enjoy the fresh, clean appearance and wonderful scent of this beautiful flowering shrub.
