Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age

Real Southern charm! The White Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Alba') is a handsome, summer-flowering, deciduous shrub or small tree! It is a favorite among Southern gardeners because of its beauty and low maintenance and its ability to handle heat, sun all day, and humidity!
The Crape Myrtle (sometimes spelled as one word or as Crepe Myrtle) is valued mainly for its long period of striking summer flowers that feed butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds! The large clusters of white flowers appear on the tips of new branches beginning in early summer and continuing into fall if you deadhead.
Crape Myrtle leaves are oval and 1 to 2 inches long, bronze-colored when they first unfold in the spring, transform green all summer, and become yellow, orange, or red before falling late in autumn. After flowers fade and fall from the tree, fruit remains in the form of small brown capsules. These fruits remain throughout the winter providing winter interest along with the attractive, exfoliating bark which peels away to expose a trunk that ranges in color from many handsome shades of brown to gray.
Planting and Application:
The White Crape Myrtle blooms light up the garden hedge and mixed shrub borders! The large bushy size provides dense screening and privacy! Lighten garden beds with a backdrop of these white-flowering shrubs that highlight everything else planted in front of them! Crape Myrtle grow together when planted 4 to 5 feet apart.
Shear and keep them as formally shaped shrubs, or let them grow naturally, you can plant Crape Myrtle as specimens, or in groups! Go big and 'limb up' your shrub to reveal the bottom third of the stems by removing their side branching. This gives you a unique flowering tree form and landscape accent! These tree-forms look attractive when underplanted with a white flowering groundcover.
- White Crepe-Papery Flower Clusters
- Bronzy New, Green Summer, Plus Yellow, Red, or Orange Fall Foliage
- Ornamental Bark For Winter Interest
- Hummingbirds & Pollinators!
- Specimens, Hedges, Large Shrubs & Small Ornamental Trees!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Crape Myrtles need full sun for the most blooms and strongest growth. Any well-drained location with regular moisture is ideal for your new shrubs, but once established, these flowering shrubs handle some drought. But for best results, provide supplemental moisture during extended periods of hot dry weather. Topdress the soil with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch to hold in moisture and enrich the soil. Crape Myrtles rebloom in late summer if the first flush of flowers is deadheaded. Prune your shrubs in the early spring before growth starts since they bloom on new wood.
- Full Sun
- Needs Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Then Low-Moisture Once Established
- Prune Early Spring - Blooms On New Wood
- Deer & Pest Resistant

Single Stem, Multi Stem, Shrub Form, Oh My!
Before you buy, make sure you know what you're getting! Single-stem, multi-stem and shrub forms are different so read a bit about which we're currently offering below.
Single Stem:
These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching. Sometimes, you will hear a single stem referred to as Tree Form.
Multi Stem:
These are plants with 2 or more stems planted together in the ground in close proximity to form a clump. There are times multi-stems are formed by a tree that branches at the soil line with more than one main stem.
Shrub Form:
These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
