Growing Zones
So much interest in one plant! The remarkable Cool Blue Variegated California Lilac (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Cool Blue') is a fantastic evergreen flowering shrub with extremely fine texture for your landscape but kicks up the color by having green filigree with a brilliant white margin on every leaf. The flowers emerge in cool blue clusters that are mildly fragrant and give way to small seed pods.
Forming loose mounded shrubs that stay low and ramble as ground cover, favoring coastal areas and sunny spots in the garden. Spring brings clusters of petite blue blossoms that form clusters, standing out against the variegated leaves. These attract bees and hummingbirds galore and last for an extended time for lasting color. Mountain Lilacs are also a host plant to several butterfly species and their larvae.
This Mountain Lilac is an incredible landscaping addition that requires little maintenance, but it is an incredible wildlife plant too! The dense branches provide cover for birds and wildlife, and the seeds and leaves provide food. While not true Lilacs, they are from the Buckthorn family, they are mildly fragrant and aren't subject to chill hours like the traditional Lilac need in order to bloom.
Planting and Application:
California, or Mountain Lilacs as they're also called, are incredible groundcover shrubs that ramble over stones in your Rock garden or over garden edges, they're mostly used as living mulch and to fill large areas in vibrant greenery that lasts year-round. Perfect on steep hillsides and hard-to-mow embankments where they are used for bank stabilization and erosion control can create naturalized banks of greenery that are low maintenance and easy care.
Ideal for firewise landscaping and drought-prone locations. Cool Blue is a great wildlife shelterbelt and border shrub to backdrop other permits, mixed-shrub plantings and garden beds. Let ramble over the tops of a retaining wall and along that 'hellstrip' by the road and sidewalks, pathways and your driveways. Pot up in a large planter for a fuss-free specimen in areas that other plants just don't do well in.
- White & Green Evergreen Foliage
- Fine Textured Upright Shrub
