Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age

Growing Zones 5-8
Big and bold purple foliage and flowers, there's no need to settle with a boring or plain bush when you can have one that will start conversations and turn heads with ravishing color. The Cooke's Purple™ Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria 'Cooke's Purple') is a shrub that inspires the imagination and offers wonderful color and shape for a wide range of landscaping uses! Just one look at this bold shrub, and you'll understand why so many landscape artists love the Cooke's Purple™ Smoke Tree.
Whatever you call it, Smoketree or Smoke Bush, Cooke's Purple™ is known for its purple foliage with reddish-orange or yellow veins and glowing red undersides. These ovular leaves are leathery and keep their color in the heat of summer better than other varieties of this species. These thick leaves have the astonishing habit of holding themselves straight upward which adds additional structure to this shrub's vase-shaped form.
While the Cooke's Purple™ Smoke Tree's foliage is remarkable, so are its summer blooms. Its dainty flowers puff upward and outward in plumes of smoke-like clusters. These delightful blooms are bright red with hints of pink and violet and look like they were pulled from a Dr. Seuss book. These wonderful puffs have a pleasant floral scent that will greet you when you arrive home or wake up in the morning to step out for your morning paper!
Planting and Application:
This shrub makes a fantastic specimen near your front entry or beside your property line. The deep purples and reds of the Cooke's Purple™ Smoke Tree also make it a great plant as a privacy screen along the roadside or fence line. These unique purples pair well with bright greens and yellows and meld with other purple, maroon, and blue!
Tall enough to become incredible screening hedges and grow into a fantastic 15-20 feet in height and width. These multi-stemmed shrubs are large enough to become a prominent tree form with some training and pruning! You’ll create a fantastic focal point flowering tree that is doubly dramatic due to the unusual color and size combination!
Both shrub and tree-form Smoke Bushes are gorgeous front yard focal points and whimsical patio trees that cast light shade! Add to a mixed shrub border as both a shrub or tree form to create a pretty patchwork of texture and pop of color! Set your house apart from the rest with a tree-form Smoke Bush street tree!
- Dramatic Purple Foliage

#ProPlantTips for Care:
The leaves are greener in shade, and a rich maroon red in full sun. Make the most of the stunning foliage. Select a planting location where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. For best performance, plant your Cooke's Purple™ Smoke Tree in a well-drained area of your yard. It thrives in almost any soil type and prefers medium moisture.
These deciduous shrubs prefer good air circulation is another important consideration. Please don't plant too close to buildings, fences or walls. Allow this shrub to reach its full glory and prune, trim or train them in the early spring only. Plan for the full mature height and width for the best effect. Apply a 3-inch layer of wood chip mulch around the plant to keep the root system cool and moist. Pull the mulch back from around the woody stems by at least 6 inches.
- Full Sun Is Best
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Prune In Early Spring
