Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 3-7
The slim and trim Columnar Norway Spruce Tree (Picea abies 'Cupressina') is a unique columnar form of the mighty Norway Spruce! Growing quite narrow when young but will eventually bulk up a bit, these compactly growing conifers are somewhat variable as they mature, with each tree growing its own way and still looking like a beautiful classical evergreen beauty!
Dark green evergreen needles are densely packed and, create a slender, uniform form with dense branching to the ground. Featuring lighter green new growth that ages to dark green and sometimes displays a gorgeous, glaucous bluish cast!
Exceptionally cold-hardy in USDA growing zones 3-7, they can grow to an impressive 25-30 feet in mature height, while maintaining a slim profile only 6-10 feet wide! Columnar Norway Spruce is a fantastic new selection and form of the classic native Norway Spruce and is now better for fitting into tight spots with this new space-saving form!
Planting and Application:
Columnar Norway Spruce arrives with their branches growing close to the ground and it's more aesthetically pleasing to keep them that way! Resist the urge to 'limb up' these fantastic privacy trees and expose their trunks! When allowed to grow in its natural state, they are a great specimen or accent or focal point for sure!
Spruce withstand heavy snow loads and are fantastic to slow drifting snow, as a windbreak or privacy wall, they tolerate heat and humidity better than others. Give your feathered friends a fortress to nest in and hide from the elements by adding these trees to your shelterbelts! A single mature tree is like a fortress and luxury hotel to a bird!
- Dense Green to Blue-Green Evergreen
- Narrow Columnar Form & Year-Round Interest
- Fast Growth & Space Saving Form
- Handles Wind & Snow
- Specimen, Hedges, Windbreak, Shelterbelt & Wildlife Friendly
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Tolerant to any well-drained soil, Spruce can withstand acidic soil and alkaline conditions alike, even thriving in poor, rocky soil. These hardy trees are deer-resistant and very cold hardy! Spruce does not do well in southern climates, but these trees have more heat and humidity than some other types of Spruce. Provide full sun for the best growth and color and moderate moisture while young trees are established. A layer of mulch over their roots helps insulate and hold in soil moisture more consistently!
- Full Sun
- Adaptable To Most Well-Drained Soils
- Thrives in Poor, Acid & Alkaline Environments
