Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight to ensure the richest purple flower color and heavy bloom production. While it tolerates partial shade, the vine will produce fewer flowers and may stretch toward the light source if it receives less than four hours of sun.
  • Soil: This vine thrives in cool, moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. For heavy clay, mix in compost to improve drainage, and always apply a thick layer of mulch over the root zone to keep the "feet" of the plant cool while the "head" stays in the sun.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide one inch of water per week to help the root system anchor itself deeply. Once the plant is mature, it can handle short dry spells, but inconsistent moisture often leads to smaller flowers or premature leaf drop. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the plant twice a week during the heat of summer to maintain vigorous growth.

Pruning Tips

The President belongs to Pruning Group 2, meaning it produces its largest flowers on old wood in late spring and smaller blooms on new growth in late summer. In early spring, simply remove dead or weak stems and cut the remaining healthy stems back to a pair of strong green buds. This "light haircut" prevents the vine from becoming a tangled mess while preserving the buds responsible for that spectacular first flush of color.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 formula, once in early spring as new growth appears. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages tender green growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. Proper timing ensures the plant focuses its energy on root strength and winter dormancy rather than vulnerable new leaves.

Royal Purple and Silver

  • Huge 7" Purple-Blue Flowers with Silvery Underside
  • Rebloomer
  • Compact Grower

Clematis 'The President' is a very popular cultivar with rich, purple-blue flowers; a very striking color!

The large 7" flowers have a somewhat cupped shape with silvery undersides and striking dark red anthers. It reblooms in late summer to early fall.

Clematis 'The President' needs a supporting structure to grow properly and it is easy to grow with a rich, porous, alkaline soil that has plenty of room for the roots to spread.

Best performance for the Clematis 'The President' is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, but will thrive and bloom in shade. Apply generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two.

Plant this hardy, compact and free-flowering clematis for a burst of color in early fall; especially noticed while other plants begin to lose their luster!
