"Keep her feet in the shade and her head in the sun"

I grew this Clematis in Germany, a older avid gardener told me to keep her feet in the shade and her head in the sun, in other words the roots should be fully shaded and them blooms in the sun. I blocked her roots with smaller plants and different stones strategically placed around her roots and she was placed on the south east side of our patio, she was the queen of the garden every spring and needed little attention except for watering and the occasional trimming.
