The magnificent purple blooms of the Purple Emperor™ Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii 'Pyrkeep') are dramatic scented flowering jewels! This is a newer cultivar of Butterfly Bush that won't crowd out its neighbors in your garden. It's most valued for its superior ornamental features that are particularly attractive to butterflies!

Your Purple Emperor's outstanding feature is of course its summer bloom that is fragrant and long-lasting! The 10-inch long clusters of delightful, purple flowers blossom from June right up until the first frost, feeding bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds with delicious and nutritious nectar.

Both the fragrance and appearance of your Purple Emperor are sure to draw both you and your yard's Pollinators with its exquisite attributes. Elliptic, serrated green leaves have a slight gloss, and add an elegant accent to the willowy branches and bright blooms. The overall effect is stunning in any setting!

Planting and Application:

The planting possibilities for this beautiful bush are endless! Use Purple Emperor for a royal touch to screening and property hedges, Rock gardens, and as graceful backdrops throughout the sun garden! Cut flower gardens and Cottage borders are all excellent uses for your Purple Emperor. It will even do well as a large container plant on your patio!

It is much smaller than the typical Butterfly Bushes you'll see. In fact, it's about one-third the size of most Butterfly Bush varieties. If you've always thought you don't have room for a Butterfly Bush, then Purple Emperor may be your answer! Try pairing Purple Emperor™ with Royal Red or Black Knight Butterfly Bushes for a colorful garden worthy of a King or Queen!

No yard? No problem! Tuck this flowering specimen into large planters around your pool seating areas or a sunny back deck! Take it up a notch and set a pair on either side of your front entry for a perfumed and pretty welcome home. Even in the ground, urban lots and courtyards benefit from brilliant color and butterflies without sacrificing space!

  • Taffy Pink, Honey Scented Blooms
  • Full-Sized Blooms On A True Dwarf Plant
  • Attracts Butterflies, Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Rounded Mounds Of Aromatic Foliage
  • Full-Sun Loving Garden Or Container Plant, Mass Plantings & Specimens!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butterfly Bushes are wonderfully easy to grow! All they ask for is full sun and steady water during their first year! Once established, Buddleja (as they can be spelled) are low-water usage but do appreciate supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning until frost. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system. Like most butterfly favorites, this deciduous plant is drought tolerant and not on any deer's menu of favorite snacks.

Deadheading keeps the shrub tidier and keeps them reblooming all season! Cut these plants back to the ground in early spring when grown in colder climates because these act more like an herbaceous perennial. For plants grown in warm growing zones, these are woody shrubs that only need an early spring trim will help ensure the best performance and best flowers. Purple Emperor is rather hardy, with no significant disease or insect issues, so an easy plant to care for as well.

  • Full Sun Shrub/Perennial
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Fertility
  • Prune Early Spring
  • No Deadheading Required
