Boxwood Care & Maintenance

planting wintergreen boxwood with Nature Hills Root Booster will provide your shrub lifelong symbiotic root system support. Follow these tips to ensure your Wintergreen Boxwood thrives:

  • Sun Needs: Boxwood does well in full sun in most climates but appreciates afternoon shade in hotter growing zones.
  • Watering: Water deeply once a week during the first year. After establishment, water as needed to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Soil Needs: Highly adaptable, Boxwood prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
  • Winter Protection: These evergreens need some wind protection in winter if grown on an exposed site, otherwise, you can treat them with wilt-stop and it's recommended you water these shrubs very well in the fall to prepare them for winter.
  • Pruning: Prune or shear in late spring or early summer after the first flush of growth to maintain its shape.
  • Mulching: Add a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.

Minty Winter Greenery!

You'll love the way this plant stays green for you all year long. Order enough Wintergreen Boxwood shrubs to complete your entire project at Nature Hills Nursery to enhance your garden with this evergreen beauty!

Hello Jane,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Wintergreen Boxwood! We’re thrilled to hear how beautifully they’ve retained their color throughout the winter and appreciate your kind words about their hardiness and low maintenance. It’s such a joy when a plant exceeds our expectations, especially during colder months when garden color and life can be harder to maintain.

If you’re looking to keep your boxwoods thriving year after year, be sure to monitor soil drainage since these plants prefer well-drained soil and consider a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support steady growth. Also, a light pruning after flowering can help maintain those crisp, neat shapes you enjoy.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave your insightful review. We’re so glad these lovely winter-hardy plants have found a special place in your garden!

Wishing you happy planting,

I would give this plant a 5 if it would just grow a little faster. It does look neat and tidy and stays that way as it grows. The intense dark green color is quite attractive.

Hi Tom,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts on your Wintergreen Boxwood! We truly appreciate your kind words about its neat appearance and beautiful, intense dark green color. It’s great to hear that the plant is living up to those aesthetic expectations for you.

Regarding the growth rate, Wintergreen Boxwoods are known for their steady, moderate growth, which helps them maintain that tidy shape you mentioned. If you’re looking to encourage a bit more vigorous growth, ensuring your plant receives consistent, deep watering, especially in the warm months, can really help. They also respond well to occasional feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreen shrubs, ideally applied in early spring. Another tip is to regularly check that your soil drains well since good drainage promotes healthy root development.
