Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

  • Widely Adaptable
  • Drought, Deer, Pest & Disease Resistant
  • Great in Containers
  • Durable Fast Hedges, Privacy & Property Definition

Beloved for use in both front yard and backyard landscapes, Boxwoods are broad-leaved evergreen shrubs that remain green all year long. One of the best varieties is Wintergreen Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Wintergreen') which is an easy Korean Boxwood plant to grow and love.

The finely textured, oval leaves are lustrous and dark green. They'll stay on the plant all winter long. New foliage in early spring is soft, and a brilliant light green.

Perhaps one of the best things about this durable, hardy plant is its adaptability to a variety of Growing Hardiness Zones. It is cold hardy, yet also performs beautifully in warmer zones, as well.

This excellent Boxwood has an upright form. No matter where you want to use it - as a foundation plant, a hedge, as an accent, in containers, or pruned into topiary - Wintergreen Boxwood will gladly accept the challenge and thrive.

Overall, Wintergreen Boxwood is a remarkable evergreen ready to grace your home with its multitude of endearing assets. Able to fit into nearly any space in your landscape, and ready to accept either your neglect or indulgence, Winter Boxwood is a wonderful evergreen for adding structure to your landscape - especially during the dormant period when other plants have lost their leaves.

Beef up your landscape today with plenty of Wintergreen Boxwood!

How to Use Wintergreen Boxwood in the Landscape

These plants are a perfect choice if you are looking to create an extremely low-maintenance garden. This is a perfect "set it and forget it" plant that will provide much-needed green color and structure to your landscaping.

Place a few of these for a short hedge along your front walkway or use one as a lovely accent at the border of your flower bed. The possibilities with this beautiful workhorse are endless

Wintergreen Boxwood is tolerant of pruning and can be shaped into your desired shape in late winter. But why not take advantage of a new garden design trend and really make it easy for yourself? These days, many people are now choosing to leave the natural form untrimmed for a more casual look.

There are so many uses for this versatile evergreen whether you shear them more formally or allow a more natural look!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Wintergreen Boxwood will take full sun or partial shade across a wide range of growing zones. They appreciate dappled or part shade protection from the hot afternoon sun in warmer climates. They have a nice, fibrous root system and transplant easily.

They prefer evenly moist, draining soils, but once established they can tolerate just about any kind of soil. They are also drought-resistant once they are established in your native soil.

Give them regular, deep watering the first year and provide additional water during any extended dry periods. You'll be rewarded with an easy-care lovely shrub.

All Boxwoods will appreciate a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over the roots to maintain more even moisture and help to keep the roots cooler in summer. A nice shredded mulch will make any landscape look more finished and give your landscape a professional look.

Keep the mulch away from the stems or trunks of trees. "Mulch Volcanos" can kill plants if piled up against the trunks. Also, you'll want to avoid cultivating the soil around the plants as they are fleshy, rooted, and fibrous and can be damaged by such activity. Keep the area under Boxwood weeded.

Give them an all-purpose fertilizer twice a year. Once in early spring to support new, lime-green foliage and once in mid-summer.

Deer tend to leave this plant alone. However, in deer country, it's best to spray with a deer repellent on the day you first plant it to "train" them to avoid nibbling on it.

You'll love the way this plant stays green for you all year long. Order enough Wintergreen Boxwood shrubs at Nature Hills Nursery to complete your entire project today!
