Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This variety thrives in full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice a significant drop in berry production and less vibrant orange-red fall foliage if it does not get enough sun.
  • Soil: Blueberries are "acid lovers" and require a soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5 to absorb nutrients. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or a large container filled with peat moss and pine bark to ensure the acidic, well drained environment they crave.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide about 1 to 2 inches of water per week to help the root system settle into its new home. Once mature, the Northsky is quite resilient, but inconsistent watering during fruit development can lead to small, shriveled berries or a stressed plant. Aim for consistent moisture at the base of the bush, especially during July and August when the next year's flower buds are forming.

Pruning Tips

Since this bush blooms on old wood, you should wait until late winter or very early spring to prune while the plant is still dormant. Focus on removing the oldest, woodiest stems and any crossing branches to open up the center for sunlight and airflow. Think of this like thinning a crowded room; it encourages the plant to put its energy into vigorous new growth that will produce the sweetest fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply an acidic fertilizer, such as one labeled for Azaleas or Rhododendrons, once in early spring before the leaves emerge and again after the berries are harvested. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this triggers soft new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first winter freeze. This helps ensure the plant stays hardy enough to handle sub zero temperatures without dieback.

The Northsky Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum x Vaccinium angustifolium 'Northsky') is an exciting Half-High Blueberry selection, introduced through the renowned University of Minnesota's Blue Breeding Program! Northsky is a very hardy, dwarf variety. It tolerates temperatures as low as bone-chilling -40 degrees Fahrenheit. It also looks amazing!

This compact plant has a dense canopy. It's able to tolerate snow loads, which makes the Northsky the first choice for those living in the cold winter extremes. In fact, the winter snow load actually protects the buds from the severe winter cold!

It's also a beautiful ornamental plant for the landscape. In spring, Northsky is completely covered in snow white, tiny, bell-shaped blossoms. Berries are decoratively set to the outside of the plant. Northsky produces small, sky-blue berries that are soft and sweet. The flavor is often described as a mild wild Blueberry. This allows for easy hand picking or raking with a special Blueberry rake. You'll also really appreciate extending your harvest time to 2 months.
