Gorgeous Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree!

If you are searching for an absolutely stunning focal point, you need to look at this best-selling tree-form Chinese Blue Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis).

Usually, Wisteria is a fast-growing vine, one you may have seen artistically adorning castles in Europe, wineries in Napa Valley, or those huge estates featured on Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous!

But, here's a secret we've shared with so many happy customers...

You can also enjoy the amazing, fragrant flowers of Wisteria on a cute, little accent tree. We've trained this amazing plant into a knock-out, single-stem tree with a nice, sturdy trunk. Our expert growers work diligently to create a one-of-a-kind, original masterpiece for you.

We have an excellent cultivar we've been growing for years. Our Blue Chinese Wisteria blooms feature a dark purple bud that opens to lovely icy lavender and purple flowers and fades to blue as the flowers age. As the flowering season progresses, the oldest blooms fade to that magnificent blue that people love.

In late spring and early summer - before the leaves appear - the tree explodes in long streams of sweet-smelling flowers that can range from sky blue to rich lavender. The elongated flower panicles can reach up to a foot in length!

This is not a tree you'll be able to ignore in full bloom. You'll love the fabulous range of these cool tones featured in your yard. The flowers simply drip from the tree in a lavish display. Because the flowers appear before the leaves emerge, the show is even more dramatic!

What about the delicious fragrance? Everyone in the neighborhood will appreciate the sweetly scented flower clusters and the butterflies they bring.

You can rest assured that this is the ORIGINAL Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree! These are amazing tree forms of the popular Wisteria vines that grow almost anywhere in the country.

We also think you'll appreciate their small, dark green leaves that turn a lovely golden fall color for interest all through the season. The Blue Chinese Wisteria tree is fast-growing and is widely adaptable all across the country.

People come back to us to place additional orders for this incredibly popular tree! They can't get enough, and we bet you'll feel the same. Order yours today!

How to Use Blue Chinese Wisteria in the Landscape

Maybe you've seen these beautiful trees in person, or online, and just have to have one (or more!) for yourself. People across the country are growing this tree-form Wisteria as a very special specimen plant.

It makes a one-of-a-kind impact on your landscape. Use one or more as a perfect touch for your front yard, or near your patio!

Use them as a highlight in your courtyard area. Do you have a big raised berm in your front yard? This is the perfect tree to use to set off your berm planting. If you want something that stands out, try two Blue Chinese Wisteria trees on either side of your front entrance. Instant curb appeal!

Of course, you'll want to see and smell the flowers in early spring. Use them near your patio for a delightful yearly treat.

They'll even work well in large containers. Need a pretty privacy screen? Use these special plants in large containers placed strategically to block your view. What a visual treat!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Please take special note of these tips so you achieve the best results.

Tree-form Chinese Wisteria are fast-growing, disease-resistant, and highly drought-tolerant once they are established in your yard. Please choose your planting site carefully.

Go ahead, take all the credit! Be ready for the questions and the praise!

They'll produce the most abundant flowers if you plant them in a spot that gets full sun all day long. In hot climates, Wisteria can handle some afternoon shade, but usually, the sunnier, the better!

Blue Chinese Wisteria tree form will adapt to just about any kind of soil, but it must be well drained. Check to see if your ground holds a puddle after a rain. If so, mound up topsoil 18 inches high. You can then dig a hole and plant your tree in that mounded-up soil for better drainage.

Give your tree plenty of room to grow. If you choose to grow Wisteria trees in a container, just make sure to use a large container with plenty of drainage holes.

Baby your Wisteria a bit when you first get them planted. Water regularly to get your new tree established. After that, it will be drought tolerant.

Avoid using lawn fertilizer near your tree, as too much nitrogen will feed the leaves, not the flowers, delaying the beautiful blooms.

Blue Chinese Wisteria is a plant that deer seem to leave alone unless desperate.

Blue Chinese Wisteria Tree Pruning

You have a lot of influence on how your plant looks once it's mature just by pruning the tree for shape when it's young. You can think of it as deciding on your tree's "hairstyle". Decide how long you want the branches to grow and the style that suits your tree best in your yard. Then, just give it regular trims to keep things nice, tidy and flowering beautifully.

Pruning is the very best method to help your tree produce flowers, too. The goal is to have plenty of nice, short flowering stems for plenty of spring blooms within the crown of your tree.

Decide which structural branches you'll keep and allow them to grow out and thicken up each season.

In late summer, you'll shape your tree for size and to reinforce that structure.

  • First, manicure your tree by removing any shaggy shoots that aren't in your training plan.
  • Next, prune back new growth shoots off your desired branches to the point where you are leaving about 5 leaf buds on those new stems coming off your main structural branch.

In late winter, it's time for another "haircut."

  • First, manicure your tree by removing any shaggy shoots that aren't in your training plan. Remove any unwanted or crisscrossing branches completely, pruning them back to the structure branch or main trunk.
  • Next, prune back those same shoots that you worked on last summer. This time, you'll shorten them even more. Leave 2 or 3 swollen flower buds on each shoot.
  • Finally, enjoy those fanciful, fragrant flowers just a few weeks later. What a joy once spring arrives!

Also, for the first year or two, you'll want to use a sturdy stake to help your young tree stand up straight. You can imagine how heavy those flowers are! A little support is very appreciated. You'll leave that stake until the main trunk is wide enough to support the whole plant by itself.

Just add our Arbor Springs kit to your cart and keep it easy for yourself.

Not blue.

Beautiful, but not blue. It took five years for the tree to bloom. I had hoped it would bloom after the first, second, or third year, but sadly, five years later, I am now getting blooms. I bought the number 3 container so I would have a larger tree to begin with, and it still took five years to bloom.

Hello Nick,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your tree. We truly appreciate your patience and dedication throughout the five years it took for your tree to bloom.

It's important to note that certain varieties, especially some flowering trees, can take multiple years to establish a strong root system and healthy growth before starring with their full blooms. Since you purchased the number 3 container for a larger specimen, it probably invested much of its energy early on into root and foliage growth, which is invaluable for long-term health and vibrant blooms down the line.

If you’re curious about verifying the expected bloom color or variety type, we’d be happy to help you with identifying specifics, or offering care tips to encourage optimal blooming in future seasons. A balanced fertilizer in early spring and ensuring full sunlight often supports bloom readiness, so feel free to reach out for further tailored advice!

Thank you again for your patience and for choosing Nature Hills for your gardening journey.

Wishing you happy planting,

Healthy tree, no blooms

My trees are over a year old, they have never bloomed and I have pruned them. Definitely stake your tree because the weight of the leaves pulls them over. Can't wait to see them bloom!

Hello Karen,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your tree! We truly appreciate your detailed feedback, especially your helpful tip about staking to support the weight of the leaves—this insight will certainly benefit other gardeners as well.

Regarding the lack of blooms, it’s great to hear your tree is healthy after over a year. Flowering can sometimes depend on the specific variety, environmental factors, and timely pruning routines. If you’d like, we can help you determine the blooming cycle for your tree and provide tailored pruning or care advice to encourage those lovely flowers you’re looking forward to. Feel free to reach out with the tree species, and we’ll be happy to assist!

Looking forward to helping your trees bloom beautifully,

Growing with you,

Just keeps blooming

This tree is incredible. It just keeps blooming and blooming. I thought it was just suppose to bloom in the spring, but it is now mid summer and it is still producing glorious blooms. I live in CA Bay Area (zone 9) and this tree seems to be going gangbusters. It is now about 2 yrs in the ground and is shaping up great. The first year a few blooms. Then the second year it went crazy. At least in this area it blooms multiple times at a young age. We will see if this trait changes as it matures.

Hello Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your delightful experience with your tree! We’re thrilled to hear that it’s thriving and blooming so abundantly for you in the Bay Area—zone 9 can be a fantastic environment for a multi-bloom cycle, and it sounds like your tree is loving it there. It’s fascinating how your tree went from a few blooms the first year to a glorious bumper bloom the second year; often, as trees mature, their blooming patterns can evolve, so your observation is right on point.

To keep supporting its continuous blooms, be sure to provide regular watering during dry spells, and consider light pruning after each major blooming to encourage the next round of flowers. Mulching can also help retain soil moisture and improve overall health. Should you want to read more about care tips tailored to your region, we have excellent resources available on naturehills.com or feel free to reach out anytime!

Thanks again for taking the time to tell us about your success story. It’s truly gardeners like you who inspire us every day!

A hearty tree with beautiful (lilac) flowers

I'm aware that wisterias can take up to 10 years to flower but mine was looking very healthy and strong approaching its third season with me (I'm not sure how many years it had developed at Nature Hills before) so I added some rock phosphate to the dirt in the fall and bone meal in the spring and was rewarded with an abundance of beautiful cascades of flowers for the first time. My only disappointment is that the flowers are purely lilac-and-white, with not a hint of blue. But I was skeptical of the color claim in the first place so it's not a surprise. Even though the "tree" arrived as an unimposing twig, it's an aggressive grower and I've been very happy with the way it has developed. It's quite stunning.

Dear MH,

Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed update on your wisteria’s journey! We’re delighted to hear that your patience and attentive care, including the addition of rock phosphate and bone meal, have truly paid off with a glorious display of flowers this season. It sounds like your wisteria has settled in wonderfully and is thriving under your care.

Regarding the lilac-and-white coloration instead of more pronounced blue tones, you’re right that wisteria flower colors can subtly vary depending on the cultivar and growing conditions, and sometimes Nature Hills-established age or rootstock traits play a role too. While the basic color tends to remain within expected shades, subtle environmental aspects like soil pH and nutrients can influence vibrance—but it seems like your plant is completely healthy and flourishing, and the floral display certainly sounds stunning either way!

If ever you wish to experiment further, adjusting soil pH slightly toward the acidic side can sometimes accentuate blue hues for certain flowers, though for wisteria, expectations for deeper blues can be tough to guarantee. For now, it sounds like you have a beautiful cascade of blooms to enjoy!

Please remember that we’re always here if you have any questions about fertilizing or caring for your wisteria over time, or if you’d like guidance on companion plants to really highlight those lovely lilac-and-white flowers!

Thank you again for choosing Nature Hills. We look forward to celebrating many more growing seasons with you.

Bloom on,

Accent Tree to Memorialize First Home

I bought this tree in June of last year 2022 to put a little beauty into the yard of our first home we purchased in Kansas, and to watch it grow each year. It took a few months to get to me. I followed all instructions and then winter came. I was worried the tree may not do good, but as soon as spring hit our tree started growing. We don't have any buds yet but the tree is thriving. I can't wait to see the flower's bloom in a few years. I will buy more plants from this retailer. Thanks!

Dear Jazzybear3333,

Thank you so much for sharing your story and your kind words about your accent tree! We’re truly honored that you chose one of our plants to memorialize such a special milestone as your first home in Kansas. It’s wonderful to hear that your tree has adapted well despite a delayed arrival and the challenges of winter—you’re doing a great job with the care and attention it needs.

As the tree continues to settle in, be mindful to keep an eye on watering—especially during dry spells—and avoid fertilizing until after the first flowering season, which can give it the best chance at healthy blooms. We’re certain those beautiful flowers will brighten your yard in the seasons to come!

Whenever you’re ready to add more plants or have any questions along the way, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help your garden flourish.

Wishing you happy planting,
