Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 9-11
Gorgeous lilac-blue double blooms, the Blue Boy Dahlia (Dahlia 'Blue Boy') create near-dinnerplate-sized blooms that carry ethereal color for months every year! Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds flock to these huge blossoms and stand atop strong slender stems for their enjoyment!
You will adore these blooms too as only a couple of blossoms fill a vase! And you will have plenty for your bouquets because they keep blooming all growing season, from summer til fall. The dramatic hue and size of these flowers really stand out in the landscape!
A rare color for Dahlias, Blue Boy is in-ground hardy throughout USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. Northern growers, and gardeners in all growing zones, can enjoy these blooms as seasonal accents and annuals, or dig the tubers up in the fall and store them as you would Canna Lily or Elephant Ear Bulbs.
Planting and Application:
These gorgeous blooms have a mound of toothy green foliage to complete the look while also accenting other plants in the garden and acting as border edging and container fillers. The tall, slender stems make Dahlia perfect cut flowers and add height to planters and along walkways where they are sure to be a spectacle in either setting!
Blue Boy Dahlia mingles well with Roses, late-season blooming perennials, and in groupings to really maximize their color impact on your landscape. Add elegance and high impact to planters and porch pots in any sunny setting! Allowing balcony and container gardeners to still enjoy these unique blooms!
- Fully Double Lavender-Violet-Blue Blooms
- Lush Green Foliage & Strong Stems
- Incredible Cut Flowers & Pollinator Magnet
- Container & Planter Sized
- Landscape Specimen & Annual Accents, Beds & Borders
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dahlia blooms all summer without fading in full to partial shade and prefers a wide range of soil types, including clay, and acidic conditions, as long as it's well-drained! Soak the tubers for a few hours before planting and plant them with their fingers spread out gently and pointing downwards. To ensure even moisture, place mulch around the base of the plant. Adding 3-4 inches of mulch helps considerably. Dahlia tubers can be dug after frost, then place in paper bags or boxes of sand in a cool place and sprinkle a little water on the tubers periodically to keep them from drying out.
- Full Sun to Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Organic Soil
- Easy Care Perennial
- Moderate Consistent Moisture
- Lift Tubers in Cold Growing Zones in Fall After Frost
- Appreciates Monthly Fertilizer
Blue Boy Dahlia will glow in your garden and add that ethereal blue hue to your beds and borders! Hurry and order this rare Dahlia color today and receive quality tubers shipped at the right planting time for your growing zone from NatureHills.com!
