Blooms twice a year for double the fragrance! The Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac (Syringa x 'SMSJBP7') is a deciduous shrub with outstanding, returning fragrant flowers! Just as the name implies, Bloomerang® will give you a burst of spring color, then boomerang back to give you another blast of floral vibrancy from mid-summer through fall!

While some Lilac varieties will provide only weeks of floral radiance, Bloomerang® will keep going for months! The Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac is a clear improvement over the original variety, providing a much larger cluster of deeply-hued flowers for perfuming your indoor vases as well. The blooms are long-lasting on the shrub and in your bouquets, and just a few will perfume your entire space!

This Proven Winners® ornamental shrub will grow 4-6 feet tall with an equal spread. It has a compact, mounded nature, and can be easily trimmed back after its spring bloom time (if you prefer a more manicured shape). Reblooming Lilacs like these have deep purple flower buds and improved disease resistance!

Wildlife loves Bloomerang® and it's a strong grower that will produce well while requiring little from you in return. As if the bright, repeating display weren't enough, Bloomerang® acts as an irresistible draw to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds with its rich fragrance! They usually pass this shrub by in favor of tastier meals except in times of desperation.

Planting and Application:

This variety of Lilac would be a terrific choice as a floral border along your property line, or as a colorful hedge to brighten that bare, exterior wall of your garage. These will even do well in containers for your patio!

Bloomerang® Lilacs look amazing in mixed-borders and foundation plantings where their three seasons of interest really can show off! Try mixing up your living fences by mixing multiple types of Lilacs for a wide variety of color and bloom times! Or mix with other Bloomerang® varieties for pinks, lavenders, and purples twice a year!

That same compelling aroma is sure to tempt you into cutting a few branches for your kitchen table bouquets, making this remarkable Lilac variety a beneficial plant both inside your home and out. Birds and wildlife love the shelter and the leaves provide shade and shelter for you as well, so use strategically around seating areas and your property to best use these multi-purpose shrubs!

A focal point that will add eye-catching curb appeal making traffic-slowing down to have a look! Be the envy of your neighborhood with a row separating your property from the road! Screen your property from an eyesore on a busy side street, or your backyard from a nosy neighbor with these fragrant blooming shrubs neither side of the fence will mind having between them! Create garden vignettes by planting a curved row of these impressive shrubs around a focal point, garden seating or sculpture!

  • Larger Deep-Purple Flower Clusters
  • Long-Lasting Display of Fragrant Blooms
  • Repeat Blooming Spring & Fall
  • Smaller Space-Saving Size!
  • Three-Season Interest
  • Wildlife & Pollinator Friendly
  • Work Well as a Cut Flower, Screen, Hedge & Specimen Shrub

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy in USDA zones 4-7, grow your Lilacs in an area with good air circulation. Bloomerang® prefers a full sun location and must have well-drained soil that is moderately moist. Be sure to keep high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer away from the roots. Lilac also tolerates partial sun or part shade in warmer climates, especially during the hot afternoon summer heat. (But you may see smaller or fewer blooms in less sun). Mulch to keep the roots cool and hold in moisture.

Remember you should not prune your Lilac until the first set of flowers finishes in late spring, and then you can reduce the size or shape, or remove the old flower heads by giving the shrub a light trim. Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Easy to Grow & Low Maintenance
  • Adaptable to Many Soil Types
  • Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
  • Prune Immediately After First Spring Flowering Only

Bloomerang® Dark Purple Lilac delivers a "blooming boomerang" of floral brilliance from spring through fall. With its high-performing features and versatile nature, it's certainly an exceptional choice for your home this year! Order yours now!

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac get?

  • Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac reaches 4-6 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide at maturity, creating a compact, rounded shrub perfect for small to medium landscapes. This manageable size makes it ideal for foundation plantings, mixed borders, and container gardens. Unlike traditional lilacs that can grow 15-30 feet tall, this reblooming variety maintains a neat, mounded shape that fits beautifully in urban and suburban settings.

Can Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac grow in containers?

  • Yes, Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac can successfully grow in containers! Use a large pot at least 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide minimum, though bigger is better for long-term health. Choose containers with excellent drainage holes and use well-draining potting mix. Container-grown lilacs require more frequent watering and benefit from annual fertilization. Protect containers from extreme winter temperatures in zones 3-5.

What is the best container size for Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac?

  • The best container for Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac should be at least 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep, but ideally as large as you can manage - up to 3 feet wide for optimal growth. Larger containers provide better insulation, require less frequent watering, and allow room for the extensive root system. Choose containers made from concrete, resin, or wood rather than plastic for better insulation and drainage.

When does Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac bloom?

  • Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac blooms twice per year - first in mid to late spring alongside traditional lilacs, then again from mid-summer through fall frost. After the spring bloom, the plant takes a brief rest to create new growth, then begins its second flowering period that can continue until the first hard frost. This reblooming habit provides months of fragrant purple flowers instead of just weeks.

Is Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac cold hardy?

  • Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac is extremely cold hardy in USDA zones 3-7, tolerating temperatures as low as those found in zone 3 climates. Like all lilacs, it actually requires a period of cold weather to bloom properly, making it perfect for northern gardens. This variety is specifically bred for superior cold tolerance while maintaining excellent flowering performance.

Does Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac need full sun?

  • Yes, Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for optimal blooming and plant health. While it can tolerate some shade, insufficient sunlight will result in poor flowering, leggy growth, and increased susceptibility to diseases like powdery mildew. Plant in the sunniest location available for best reblooming performance.

What makes Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac different from regular lilacs?

  • Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac is a breakthrough reblooming lilac that flowers twice per year instead of once like traditional lilacs. It's also more compact (4-6 feet vs 15-30 feet), more disease-resistant, and requires less maintenance. The dark purple buds open to classic lilac-purple flowers with the same beloved fragrance, but you get to enjoy blooms from spring through fall rather than just a few weeks in spring.

How do I care for Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac?

  • Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac is low-maintenance and easy to grow. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil, water regularly during establishment then drought-tolerantly once mature. Fertilize in early spring and again after the first bloom with balanced fertilizer. Prune lightly immediately after spring bloom if desired, but avoid fall/winter pruning. This variety is naturally disease-resistant and deer-resistant.

Is Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac deer resistant?

  • Yes, Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac is naturally deer resistant, like most lilac varieties. The plant's natural compounds and texture make it unappealing to deer and other browsing animals. This makes it an excellent choice for gardens in areas with deer pressure, providing beautiful, fragrant blooms without the worry of damage from wildlife.

How do I encourage reblooming on Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac?

  • To encourage the best reblooming on Bloomerang Dark Purple Lilac, ensure it receives full sun (6+ hours daily), provide consistent moisture during late spring and early summer when new growth develops, and fertilize after the spring bloom. You can lightly prune after spring flowering to remove spent blooms and encourage new growth, though this will delay the rebloom by a few weeks compared to an unpruned plant.

So far, so good...

Packaged very well, no problems. The plant was nice and full for its size (3 gallon).Planted it the Spring of 2019, and it seems to be growing well. We will see how it fares over our harsh Wisconsin winter. Only saw a few flowers on it this summer, but hopefully next Spring (2020) we will see many more!

Dear Connie,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful update with us! We’re delighted to hear that your 3-gallon plant arrived safely and is growing well in your Wisconsin garden. It’s wonderful that it was nice and full upon arrival—plants loved inside packaging helps them thrive once planted.

Harsh winters can indeed be challenging, but many customers in colder zones find success by providing a bit of extra mulch or protection like burlap wraps to shelter tender plants through freezing temperatures. As spring approaches, you might also consider applying a slow-release fertilizer to encourage vibrant new growth and abundant flowering.

We’re excited to hear you’re hopeful for more blooms in the coming season and truly appreciate you trusting us with your garden. Should you have any questions or need guidance tailored to your area, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re happy to help.
