Blooms All Season

Bleeding Heart Burning Hearts, Dicentra 'Burning Hearts', adds color to the front of your shade border. This neat, compact Dicentra blooms from mid-spring until the first frost.

Dicentra 'Burning Hearts' PPAF has deep, rose-red, heart-shaped blossoms that are suspended on curved stems over the feathery, blue-grey foliage.

'Burning Hearts' is more compact and longer-blooming than other Bleeding Hearts. Potted in your favorite container, this dwarf plant is a great way to fill that empty shady spot in your landscape.

Dicentra is perfect for a border or patio container, and will thrive in a partially shaded spot. This really is a shade lover, delighting in full to partial shade conditions.

This plant will perform in the full sun but will tend to disappear in mid-summer when it has all the sun it can handle. It usually pops back up the following spring.

Burning Hearts is is a plant for fertile but well-drained soils. It prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soils similar to a great woodland soil full of organic matter and richly fertile.

The simplest way to mimic this is to add several shovels of compost around the base of the plant every spring.

Bleeding Heart Burning Heart truly are a good shade plant. The red flowers brightened up the 'blah' part of my back yard.

If you ever need tips to keep your Bleeding Heart thriving, remember to provide it with consistently moist, well-draining soil and some filtered sunlight, especially in hot climates. They tend to appreciate a mulch layer to maintain soil moisture and coolness. Also, don’t worry if the foliage begins to die back later in the season; it’s a natural part of their life cycle.

I bought this at my local "Farmers Market" because it was said to grow in partial shade. One month later and also records amount of rain, only one out of three is doing well. The rabbits seem to like the flowers and one of the three is almost dead. I'm not sure if I should be blaming the rabbits or the rain.

Hello K.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Burning Hearts Bleeding Heart! We truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback and understand how puzzling it can be when some plants thrive while others struggle, especially after accounting for factors like rain and local wildlife.

Burning Hearts typically do well in partial shade and enjoy consistent moisture—but stressful conditions like excessive rain or damage from rabbits can certainly take a toll. Since you’ve noticed the rabbits interested in some plants, they could be nibbling on young shoots or delicate flowers, contributing to the one plant’s poor health. To protect your bleeding hearts, you might try temporarily covering them with rabbit-proof netting or using humane deterrents such as garlic spray around the perimeter. Additionally, ensuring the soil drains well can help prevent root issues related to heavy rains.

We also recommend checking out our plant care guides on plant protection in your environment here on NatureHills.com, which offer some excellent DIY solutions that might ease these challenges.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you want personalized advice —we’re happy to assist you in helping those Burning Hearts flourish!

Hello k.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Burning Hearts Bleeding Heart plants. We truly appreciate you taking the time to provide such detailed feedback—it helps us and other gardeners understand what to expect.

It sounds like you’re navigating some tough conditions between the heavy rain and those persistent rabbits! These plants do prefer partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil, so excess rain can sometimes lead to stress or even root issues if drainage isn’t ideal. We recommend ensuring the soil isn’t waterlogged by improving drainage with organic matter or shifting the plants if possible.

As for the rabbits, unfortunately, they are quite fond of bleeding heart flowers and sometimes even the foliage. You might consider using physical barriers like garden netting or natural rabbit repellents (such as sprays made with garlic or onion) to protect your plants. Companion planting with lavender, marigolds, or other rabbit-deterring plants could also help add a bit of buffer in your garden.

Don’t be discouraged — bleeding hearts need a little attention in their ideal conditions but are wonderful, charming additions overall. If you’d like, we’re happy to share more resources or plant care tips to ensure you get the most success from these beauties!

Wishing you happy planting,
