Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones
Deep, dark, mysterious color, the Black Star Calla Lily (Zantedeschia 'Black Star') is a gorgeous blend of dark burgundy and purple on silken funnel-shaped formal blooms that rise above foliage that is pretty enough to hold its own when the flowers aren't on the scene.
Long, spear-like upright foliage with a slight ripple to the edge and curious silvery speckles all over the leaves, are as clean and formal as their blooms! Rising above the backdrop of deep-green foliage, the striking flowers call butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden. Growing 18-20 inches tall when in bloom and spreading 12-24 inches wide, Black Star is fast-growing and easy to care for!
While not cold-hardy, Northern gardeners and Southern gardeners can use Black Star as annual thrillers in containers or moved into a greenhouse or enclosed patio for the winter. Often these can be forced as houseplants for the winter with great success! Frost-free growing zones of 8 to 10 can enjoy these perennial rhizomes outdoors all year round!
Landscape Application:
Perfect flowering plants in containers and specimen plants, even northern gardeners can enjoy these blooms all growing season as hardy perennials. Snip a few blossoms for bouquets in your Cutting garden, or keep them in your Butterfly garden for your pollinators!
Slowly spreading, the rhizomes and tubers multiply politely. Black Star Calla Lilies fill mixed Perennial borders, and Cottage garden beds with vivid blooms! Try adding to a dark flower garden with other dark and mysterious blooms with brooding colors lasting all summer long!
Seating areas, birdbaths, outdoor sculptures, and urns become the main features with a skirting of these around their bases. Their formal structure creates lovely accents in Meditation and Asian-inspired landscapes as well! Tuck Black Star into a sunny window box or create formal rings around potted shrubs and trees for a finished, clean look.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
An easy-care perennial rhizome, Calla Lilies loves soaking up the sun but also handles partial shade. Natives to southern and central Africa, these perennials enjoy moist to wet soil. So plant around a water feature, pond or stream where they can soak up the moisture and humidity! Water your Calla Lily regularly, especially while in containers and newly planted in the ground!
Plant your rhizomes in the spring if you live in frost-free climates 8 to 10, but northern growers can plant these in the winter as forced bulbs, or in the spring outdoors after the threat of frost has passed. Cold climate gardeners can also dig these rhizomes in fall and store them as they would Dahlia or Canna bulbs, keeping them in cool storage in garages or sheds for the winter months.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Soil
