Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.
Young Plants (6 months to 18 months old)
Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |

4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 4-9
For an architectural landscape feature, choose the durable Blaauw Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Blaauw'). Dense, columnar form and short, blue-gray and green, evergreen needles make a striking impression…just about anywhere you want to plant it!
Blaauw thrives in full sun or partial shade. It's blissfully "un-picky" about soil type or soil pH, as long as it is well-drained!
Planting and Application:
This is the kind of low-maintenance conifer people dream about. No one sees through the slim, trim profile and thick, aromatic, short, blue-gray and green plumes of a Blaauw Chinese Juniper.
- Use a single one as a showy living "exclamation point". Blaauw easily amplifies the visual interest for garden guests to enjoy as they move through your yard.
- Or, plant many of them in a narrow privacy screen with a spacing of three feet between each plant. No need to worry about them overcrowding a tight side yard or small space garden!
- Define the edge of your property with a handsome hedgerow. Try a staggered double row if you want the fastest results.
- Blaauw's strongly ascending branches give the feeling of strength. Create an effective feature with a semi-circular planting of Blaauw behind a weeping flowering tree like Snow Fountains Weeping Cherry.
- Perfect for new homeowners and experienced gardeners, these low-maintenance small trees make a great sentry pair; so plant one on either side of your front door for a grand entrance. It's best to allow plenty of room for them to reach the maximum spread listed on the Plant Highlights…and always add extra for easy access to your home for maintenance.
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Juniper in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade with at least four hours of sunlight a day. Water consistently during the first season to get the plants established; and then only in extended dry weather.
- If you have cold winters, plan to water deeply in late fall. This provides an easy way to protect the evergreen branches from winter damage.
- Prune in early spring to correct shape, if needed. Cut any long, wayward branches back into the canopy by six inches or so for the most natural look.
- Our high-end Juniperus chinensis 'Blaauw' is also a popular Bonsai candidate for wiring and sculpting. This ancient pruning technique truly brings out the raw power of the upright branching.
