Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-8
Tall and slender maroon towers, this Barberry is quite different from its other siblings! Forming a columnar punctuation mark in the landscape, the Helmond Pillar Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Helmond Pillar') matures into a vertical, narrow-growing piece of living statuary!
The rich purple-red foliage is dotted with tiny, bright yellow flowers in spring which morph into cute red berries in the fall. Much to the delight of your bees and other pollinators, and later your hungry songbirds!
This columnar Japanese Barberry exhibits a dense vertical growth and then shows off in the fall with more dramatic autumn tones! But don't worry, even though the leaves have dropped, these deciduous shrubs maintain a pretty stem color and those imposing thorns that make deer and trespassers think twice.
Like most Barberries, Helmond is virtually carefree: no real problems with diseases or pest issues. Deer leave them alone and pruning is strictly optional, making them an easy purchase decision! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8, Barberry are incredibly easy to grow and low-maintenance garden gems!
Planting and Application:
A supreme space-saving hedge shrub, you'll gain 4-5 foot tall screening while only using 1-2 feet of ground! Create a privacy hedge along your property line to shield your backyard from a messy or nosy neighbor, block foot traffic that won't keep off the grass, or hide that chainlink fence!
The unique form is ideal as an architectural feature or for framing a garden bench, entrance to your backyard, or a garden path, or standing as sentries on either side of your front entry! Both in the ground, as thrillers in mixed containers, or a singular planting in pretty urns, Helmond will easily draw the eye and boost your curb appeal!
The strong structural lines of Helmond Pillar Barberry lend it to a myriad of placements! Try a few as accents in a mixed perennial border, as a truly unique focal point plant, or as a formal hedge, divider, or backdrop to your other garden beds.
Helmond Pillar easily stands up to pollution, so feel free to create a barrier planting along your front yard to divide it from the street! As barrier plantings, Barberry is ideal to keep out trespassers or block anyone from trying to gain entrance to that first-story window without blocking your view. Create a barrier hedge by spacing Helmond one to one and a half feet apart on center for a solid to near solid fill.
Of course, Helmond Columnar Barberry is an ideal exclamation point for a specimen planting to add a pop of color and height among other plants! The excellent, richly colored foliage pairs beautifully with shrubs and perennials with light green or golden foliage! They of course look great with other Barberry bushes and their wide range of red, orange, chartreuse, and gold foliage and wide variety of shapes and sizes!
- Purplish-Red Foliage

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Barberry will have the best coloration in full sun. Highly adaptable to any type of well-drained soil. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster in a slightly acidic location and ensure a consistent watering schedule for new plants. Try using the Finger Test to make sure you don't let new installations dry out. Once established Barberry is quite drought-tolerant! Provide a nice 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch to protect the top of the roots. You can let it grow freely or prune or shear after flowering.
Unfortunately, the birds adore the berries and do spread the seeds around. In some locations of the country, Barberry does a bit "too well". Find out if you can safely grow these delightfully colorful shrubs in your community. Type in your zip code in our Hardiness Zone Finder, located above the Plant Highlights to find out, or contact your local County Extension Office.
- Great Color In Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture & Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Low-Maintenance - Prune After Flowering If Needed
