Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.
Young Plants (6 months to 18 months old)
Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |
4" Container | 0.31 - 0.87 dry quarts | 0.35 - 0.96 dry liters |
4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |
6" Container | 1.4 dry quarts | 1.59 dry liters |
1 Quart | 1 dry quart | 1.1 dry liters |
5.5" Container | 1.89 dry quarts | 2.08 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 4-9
Need a golden columnar shrub for a tall impact without the wide footprint? The Golden Rocket Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Rocket') is just your new feature planting! Golden Rocket shoots straight up into a narrow showy spire of bright yellow foliage!
Pale yellow, little bell-shaped flowers appear in spring, they're not the show and are sometimes hard to see. Just follow the steady stream of fat bumblebees, native bees, and butterflies and you'll find them! The birds will be next to arrive because those diminutive blooms are followed by bright red berries in fall! These can persist through the winter if songbirds don't snatch them all up.
This upright-growing deciduous shrub can top out at around 5 feet in height, but only spreads into a slim 1-2 foot wide width! This Barberry is great for growing in USDA planting zones 4-9. Deer, pest, and disease-resistant, these shrubs are a dream to grow!
Landscape Application:
Like all Barberry, Golden Rocket has spines or sharp edges along the stems so use caution when handling, but go ahead and create a screening hedge around your pool or property to keep unwanted trespassers or prying eyes out! Not only will the pokies keep invaders out, but it also makes Barberry high on the deer resistance list.
Since Golden Rocket has a naturally upright growth habit and is very space-saving, it can also be used as a hedging plant in those tight squeezes - along the side of your home or a pathway (just keep it pruned cleanly so you don't snag your clothing!), or as a golden backdrop to your other landscaping beds! We're sure the gilded foliage will set off your Rosebushes, flowering shrubs, and perennials beautifully!
Use this plant in tall containers for porch and patio punctuation, as thrillers in mixed or formal planters, as pops of colors among a mixed shrub border, or as showy focal points when used in small groups, and lawn specimen plantings! Try mixing Golden Rocket with its cousin the Orange Rocket Barberry!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
For the best color, plant Golden Rocket in full sun, but it will tolerate partial shade, as well. Like many plants, it needs well-drained soil. If you see puddles in your planting site after rain, you'll want to improve the drainage. Add 18 - 24 of soil in a mound, then plant in that mound like a raised berm.
When your plants are young, give them moderate amounts of water regularly to help their roots get established in your soil. Give young plants water if you have an extended drought. After the first few seasons, it will become tolerant of drought.
The stems can be thinned out in late winter so the plant maintains a tidy form or is left to grow naturally, both will look great! You can shear these plants after the pollinators have had their fill, especially if you want to reduce the number of berries. If you don’t want to deprive your birds of their fall feast, and since these shrubs flower on old wood, try shaping and resizing by way of renewal pruning instead.
