Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native plants and trees that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! The Audubon® Native Swamp Dogwood (Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua), also known as Pale Dogwood, features green leaves that appear in pairs and purplish-brown young shoots for a verdant garden addition!

All summer, you and your pollinators will enjoy the white blossoms, quickly followed by great fall color and a generous crop of beautiful blue berries! Growing upright, with a looser growth habit and multiple stems, these create an open and rounded appearance. Perfect for use in poorly drained sites and for preventing lake and stream bank erosion and for more alkaline sites.

While the berries are highly beneficial to songbirds, your insect-eating birds will find plenty on the menu as well! A host plant for a wide variety of caterpillars and other tasty bugs that feed on its foliage, birds that are feeding hungry chicks will be frequent visitors!

Planting and Application:

Swamp Dogwood are typically found in swamps, moist borders, floodplains, wetlands, meadows, prairies and along streams. Well-known as a Bog Plant and around ponds. You’ll find them adaptable to where the gutters drain or in Rain Gardens!

Dogwood shrubs spread to form thickets if left to their own devices, and the branches may form roots at the tips or nodes where they touch the ground. Allow them to form fast shelterbelts, hedges, for wildlife and wetland naturalizing, erosion control, steep slopes and ideal for mass planting. All of which benefit birds by providing food, cover and sheltered nesting sites!

  • Yellowish-White Blooms in Late Spring
  • Generous Crop of Beautiful Blue Berries for Birds
  • Wildlife Interest, Food & Shelter
  • Caterpillar Host Plant - Azure Butterfly & Many Species of Moth
  • Vital for Thrush, Vireo, Grosbeak, Bluebird, Waxwing, Robins & Hummingbirds
