How to Use Audubon® Native Got Milkweed In The Landscape

Swamp Milkweeds with their sweet and spicy fragrant pink and white blooms are very dramatic and showy. Taller, clump-forming perennials, they’re fantastic workhorses in locations that may have occasionally soggy soils.

The Butterfly Weed Milkweed, sometimes called Butterflyweed, is a fantastic bright orange bloom with bushy, shorter growth and lance-shaped leaves. Equally beneficial to pollinators and Monarch butterflies, these are tough clump-forming perennials as well!

The Showy Milkweed is also quite the looker and tough as nails as its native cousins. Bright white stars transition to pink and held aloft on a lovely green clump of foliage with pink stems and veins.

All 3 varieties are fantastic among Cottage and Perennial garden settings as well as in more wild areas, meadows, Prairie restoration and drifts for Pollinator gardens! While tolerant of wet sites, they are equally at home in the Rock garden as well!

Thriving in full sun and poor conditions, there’s few areas any of these three varieties will not do well! Our experts will select the one best suited to your region and ship it to you!

Milkweeds would be perfect for those difficult, low spots in your yard, as it thrives in moist conditions. Use them in planned Rain Gardens to help filter potentially polluted water runoff from roofs and streets.

Milkweed contains natural compounds like cardenolides, which protect the baby caterpillars from being eaten by birds. You'll love seeing the cute black, white and yellow caterpillars on your own plants!

Wildcrafters and homesteaders can research an amazing variety of uses. In its various stages, Milkweed pods are used as a nematode insecticide, as an adhesive, and even as a poison ivy treatment.

Fantastic additions to floral arrangements, even after the flowers have faded, Milkweed forms eye-catching four-inch seed pods that are a favorite of young and old alike. Once ripe, they'll split to release the brown seeds...using silky white hair to catch the wind and reach new destinations.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Full sun locations are best for all of these types of Milkweed species. For the strongest stems and most vigorous growth, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

These plants tolerate a wide range of well-drained soil conditions, poor and rocky, gravel, dry arid sites, hot baked ground or occasionally flooded areas, they will do amazingly once established.

Milkweed is an attractive, herbaceous perennial and is best cut back to the ground in early spring. Please leave the stalks standing over winter, as they provide valuable shelter. To prevent the spread of unwanted Milkweed seeds, remove the pods while they’re still green. Or let them self-seed and spread to further aid your local butterfly population if you have the room for them to roam!

Regular waterings while young plants are establishing, however drought-tolerant once settled into their new homes, protect your investment by providing supplemental moisture in times of need.
