Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

The National Audubon Society presents a new line of native trees that helps birds and wildlife thrive in your area! The unique blooms of the Audubon® Native Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) feature amazing white streamer-like flowers that cover the plant! Also known as Grancy Graybeard or Man Beard tree, these Olive family members even produce tiny fruit.

Even the long, medium to dark green leaves are pretty! Both male and female trees bloom, making your pollinators happy, but in late summer, female trees bear grape-like berries that are relished by birds. Highly Ornamental, the deciduous leaves drop in autumn, but not before the wide, spear-shaped leaves turn golden-yellow.

This is a great, non-fussy tree, tolerating air pollution, they're good in urban settings. Bird-Friendly, the Audubon website says they attract American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, Wood Thrushes, Northern Mockingbirds, Gray Catbirds, Brown Thrashers, Scarlet Tanagers, and Blue-headed Vireos!

Planting and Application:

Fringetrees are fantastic specimens. They are delicately textured screens, or great included in mixed borders. This tree makes an impact in your yard as a focal point and casts light shade over patios and garden beds.

Plant it in small groups, or in rows along woodland borders. They can be placed along a driveway, or near a pond without worry. A Host Plant for caterpillars of native Sphinx Moth larvae, but don’t worry about them eating up your tree, they are actually food for your many songbirds and their ravenous chicks!
