Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

We’re proud to introduce the National Audubon Society line of native trees that have been selected to help birds and wildlife in your area! Well-known for being beneficial for people, the antioxidant-rich berries of the Audubon® Native Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) are just as beneficial for birds and wildlife too!

An upright, mounded shrub that bursts into spring with clouds of white blossoms that your pollinators will adore! Lush foliage and great fall color, this is a wonderful beneficial native plant that brings many bird species to your yard. The berries are especially welcome during the winter when food is especially scarce.

Watch the flowers change into green berries that become red, then purple and finish black. Add to smoothies, jams, jellies and sauces. Producing as much as 30 - 40 pounds of Aronia berries per plant. That’s plenty for you, and for your feathered friends!

Planting and Application:

Plant for definition as a low hedge, and can be used for screening. Besides birds, Aronia are Caterpillar Host Plants for many Lepidoptera butterfly species.

Add to the edge of woodlands, Rain Gardens, occasionally soggy areas, or the back of Butterfly Gardens, and as wildlife shelterbelt habitats and repeated along the length of a mixed border. Hedges can also be used as snow fencing along a long driveway. No need to trim them, just give about 4 feet from the concrete to reach their full, natural spread!

  • Darling White Flowers in Spring
  • Lustrous Green Summer Foliage & Gorgeous Red, Purple & Orange Fall Foliage
  • Healthy Fruit in Fall for both Humans & Wildlife
  • Rain Gardens, Pollinator, Bird & Mixed Shrub Borders
  • Benefit Local Blue Jay, Robin, Mockingbird, Waxwing, Ruffed Grouse & Turkey

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Growth and fruit production is best in full sun, but Chokeberry Bushes tolerates partial shade. Likewise, well-drained soil is best, but they are very adaptable.

  • Regular Moisture & Thick Mulch Over the Roots
  • Best Pruned by Removing Oldest Stems in Early Spring
  • Prefers Average Fertility & Tolerates Well-Drained Moist to Average Soil
  • Both Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Tolerates Acidic Soil & Saline Conditions
