Brilliant contrasting flowers and foliage, the airy spritely baby pink flowering spires and lacy, heavily dissected foliage, the Sprite Astilbe (Astilbe simplicifolia 'Sprite') was Perennial of the Year in 1994 and one can see why! With its wonderful apple blossom pink flowers and dark bronze foliage with crinkly edges, it is definitely an eye-catcher!

The flowers contrast wonderfully with the glossy foliage! The rust-colored seed heads are also attractive in the fall and bring winter interest! Until then, the mid-summer long-lasting blooms are super showy despite being the smallest False Spirea in the Astilbe family! Growing just 12 inches in height when in bloom!

Also known as False Spirea and Meadowsweet, Astilbe is hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 8! These cold and heat-tolerant perennials grow just 10-12 inches wide when mature, creating lovely clumps of lacy leaves in the partly shaded garden.

Landscape Application:

In the garden bed and border, or even in pots and planters, any shaded location will benefit from these whimsical summer-flowering perennials! Mass plantings beneath the dappled canopy of large trees or on that soggy side of the north and eastern sides of your home, or as a ring of fringe around the bases of larger shrubs or evergreen hedges - Astilbe becomes the elegant finishing touch your landscape has been searching for!

Astilbe are fantastic pollinator gardens and cutting garden flowers, these fluffy flowers and their fine-cut leaves beautifully dress up your perennial borders and cottage gardens! Mix among Hostas and Ferns, Bleeding Hearts, and Brunnera for a showy shade garden display!

  • Lacy Soft Pink Textured Spires
  • Heavily Dissected Bronzy-Green Foliage
  • Dwarf-Sized Perennial Mounds
  • Bees & Butterflies - Attracts Hummingbirds
  • Gorgeous Cut Flower Filler
  • Space-Saving Filler & Spillers In Containers & Shaded Garden Beds

#ProPlantTips for Care:

False Spirea is most successfully grown in a shady area but can tolerate some morning sun, handling more sun in cooler climates. A moist, well-drained area is key for this plant, and Astilbe even tolerates higher soil moisture, especially in more sun. Do not allow Sprite to dry out, and top dress with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around its roots to keep the soil moisture consistent and enrich the soil. Do not cut back the leaves of Astilbe in the winter because the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage, but prune in early spring.

  • Full Sun to Full Shade Depending On Climate
  • Needs Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Moderate to High Moisture
  • Prune Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbits Seldom Bother Astilbe

Short plant

The Sprite astilbe is a shorty compared to my other astilbes.

Dear Could H.,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Sprite Dwarf Astilbe! You’re absolutely right—the Sprite variety is known for its more compact size compared to many other astilbes. Its lower, mounded habit actually makes it a wonderful option for edging borders, rock gardens, or adding texture to smaller spaces where taller astilbes might overwhelm.

If you’re hoping to add height or mix textures, pairing your Sprite Dwarf Astilbe with some taller varieties could create lovely layered effect in your garden. Also, since this cultivar tends to stay on the petite side, it's a great pick if you want color without added height in certain spots.

Feel free to explore our catalog or reach out if you need ideas for combining astilbes or other compatible companion plants—we’re always here to help!

Bloom on,
The Nature Hills Plant Knowledge Team

Hello Could Have,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Sprite Dwarf Astilbe! You’re absolutely right—the Sprite Astilbe is known for its compact size, making it an ideal choice when you’re looking to add texture and color without overpowering your garden space. Its small stature allows it to pair beautifully with taller astilbes and other perennials, creating a layered, dynamic effect.

If you’re aiming for a fuller, taller look, you might consider mixing various astilbe varieties, including some with larger or taller growth habits, to amplify the overall height variation in your beds. Also, astilbes generally love moist, well-drained soil and partial shade—it sounds like they’re thriving in your garden alongside others!

If you’d like, we’re happy to offer guidance on selecting companion plants or tackling any care questions you might have to keep all your astilbes flourishing bigger or more vibrant.

Rooting for your garden’s success,
Your Nature Hills Plant Care Team
