Deep purple blooms and centers, the Purple Dome New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome') is a pollinator and buzzing bee go-to nectar resource that you will absolutely adore having in your landscape! These faster-growing perennials may not bloom right away, they do bloom just when other plants are calling it quits! Vibrant purple fluffy, frilly blooms start in summer and last right until frost in most climates!

Not just long-lasting blooms, the Purple Dome Aster blooms profusely and completely covers the plant. It is a definite bee and butterfly and bird attractor and a real show-stopper! The neat and tidy rounded mounds of green foliage are so easy-care and have minimal maintenance to keep them looking great!

Growing to about 1-2 feet high and 2-3 feet wide, these space-saving perennials are readily tucked into large existing gardens and small yards with ease! Very cold-hardy and deer-resistant plants, Purple Dome retains its native family's adaptability and endurance! Featuring fast growth and finely textured green leaves, Aster plants look fantastic even when not in bloom!

Planting and Application:

Purple Dome makes an excellent container plant or front of the garden feature! Add as a solo specimen spilling over the edges of a pot or as a late season accent in mixed planters around your patio, front porch or even decorating your front entry with seasonal color! In the garden bed and border, these are tidy edging and mass planting perennials! Use in solid rows or winding bands throughout perennial gardens for late season color!

Aster looks outstanding when paired with ornamental grasses, late blooming Rudbeckia, Coneflowers, and Chrysanthemums! They of course look fantastic with other Asters! These cheerful little plants fit anywhere in the sun garden, perennial border or cottage garden! And adding just one or two turns any garden into a pollinator garden! Aster are a host plant for the Pearl Crescent Butterflies larvae, and feeds hungry bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects with their generous amounts of late-season nectar!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Requiring full sun, Purple Dome can take some afternoon shade in the hottest of its favored USDA growing zones of 4 through 8. Plant these herbaceous perennials in a moderate soil range with good drainage. Tolerant of lower moisture to average moisture environments once established, Aster should not be allowed to become extremely dry during the summer. Pinching back the stem tips in late spring and early summer will produce denser growth and heavier blooming. This plant may be divided every few years in the spring.

  • Cold Hardy & Adaptable
  • Moderate Moisture & Well-Drained Soils
  • Pinch Back in Late Spring/Early Summer
  • Rust, Disease & Deer Resistant

Lovely blooms

I thinned my purple dome asters out some this past year in the hopes to get a little bigger flowers. They were getting so thick and I think they were over crowded. Lots of flowers though!

Dear Diane,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Purple Dome New England Asters! It’s wonderful to hear that your thinning efforts encouraged lots of lovely blooms—crowding can definitely make it tough for flowers to reach their full size. You did a great job by spacing them out, which helps air circulation and allows each plant to thrive.

For an even bigger floral display next season, you might consider deadheading spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming, and making sure they’re planted in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight. These asters typically love full sun and benefit from consistent moisture without being waterlogged.

If you’d like, we also have care guides and planting tips on our site that could help you optimize the health and size of your asters in the coming years.

Thanks again for your thoughtful review and happy gardening!

Lovely blooms

Hi Diane,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Purple Dome New England Asters! It sounds like your thinning strategy was right on track—overcrowding can definitely limit how large and vibrant the flowers get. You did a great job giving your plants the space they need, and we’re thrilled to hear you still enjoyed lots of lovely blooms!

For continued success, a good tip is to thin asters early in the season by selecting the healthiest, strongest stems to grow out fully. Also, ensuring consistent watering and light feeding can boost flower size and overall plant health. If you need any guidance on fertilizer options or watering schedules, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback. We’re rooting for your asters to blossom their brightest year after year!

If you're interested in making their color even more pronounced or encouraging continuous blooming throughout the season, placing them in full sun with well-drained soil is often a big help. Long bloom time, attracts butterfly and honey bees

Simply beautiful! The plant is covered with blooms the first year. I planted two around my light pole, a true eye catcher.

Hello kimw2wur,

We’re thrilled to hear that your plants are blooming beautifully in their first year and creating such a stunning focal point around your light pole. It’s fantastic that they’re also attracting butterflies and honey bees—that’s such a lovely bonus for your garden and local pollinators.
