Bursting onto the vegetable scene in early spring, the tasty spears of Asparagus will usher in the rest of the growing season! The Purple Passion Asparagus (Asparagus 'Purple Passion') brings a great surprise to the usual Asparagus-green color palette! Producing a heavy crop of smokey purple to nearly blue-green spears of good size! Even showing some traditional Asparagus green on each stem!
Purple Passion Asparagus is the favorite for foodies and connoisseurs alike, the tender texture is not stringy like some varieties of Asparagus can be. Great raw on sandwiches, shredded into slaw and salads, and even delectable juiced! Try it on a charcuterie board, veggie tray, or as stylish hors d'oeuvres.
The cooked spears of Purple Passion Asparagus turn bright green once cooked, but the flavor makes up for it! Still tender and not stringy. Great in pasta and egg dishes, and as an amazing, healthful side dish! Asparagus has a mild, unique flavor that compliments any main course! And health benefits it has in abundance - Fiber, vitamins, and minerals galore! Cold and heat-tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 3 - 10, these are disease, rust and rot-resistant plants!
Planting and Application:
The big meaty spears are flavorful and mild but are a superfood that are perennial additions to the vegetable and kitchen gardens alike. Companion plants for Asparagus are Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Strawberries, and many different herbs. The fast growth and colonizing nature mean that you'll enjoy more and more spears each year!
Plant in cut flower gardens and among Roses or Perennials as lacy backdrops and frilly filler for vase arrangements! Add the airy foliage of older plants looks great in bouquets or in garden beds and borders as a back-of-the-border airy backdrop. The larger plants even bloom in the summer with whitish-yellow blooms and form little berries in fall (these are not edible but birds may like them). Add the airy foliage of older plants looks great as edible landscaping additions in cut flower bouquets or in garden beds and borders as a back-of-the-border airy backdrop.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Asparagus needs plenty of room to grow and spread underground, so provide a sunny and well-drained plot with fluffy enriched soil. If you have very soggy soil or poor drainage, plant the Asparagus roots in a raised bed to increase drainage. Plant bareroot Asparagus 1-foot apart in rows 4 feet apart, about 6-8 inches deep. Water well and provide moderate moisture once established. Purple Passion has shown great resistance to rust, root and crown rots, as well as fusarium.
Once your Asparagus roots have established sometime after the first full year, when your Asparagus spears emerge, wait for them to reach about a foot in height before cutting these shoots just below the soil surface. Each crown will continue to produce more spears from spring into early summer, so check back often.
