Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This silver beauty performs best in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct light daily to maintain its dense, cushion-like shape. While it can handle light afternoon shade in very hot climates, too much shade causes the stems to stretch and lose that brilliant metallic sheen.
  • Soil: It requires sharply drained soil to thrive and will quickly decline in areas where water collects after a rain. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised bed or a container with plenty of grit to ensure the roots stay dry and healthy.

Watering Requirements

During its first season, water once or twice a week to help the roots settle into their new home. Once established, Makana™ Silver is exceptionally drought tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. Overwatering or inconsistent moisture often leads to root rot or a "floppy" center, so it is better to lean on the side of underwatering once the plant is mature.

Pruning Tips

Because this Artemisia is a fast grower, think of pruning like a routine haircut to keep it looking tidy. Lightly trim the foliage in early spring to shape the mound and remove any winter tip burn, as it primarily grows on new wood. Avoid cutting back into the old, woody interior of the plant, which can prevent it from filling back out properly.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as new growth appears to fuel its rapid development. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, tender growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.

Want to add an ethereal plant to your garden? Then buy Makana™ Silver Artemisia (Artemisia makana 'TNARTMS') and feel like you are walking among clouds of silvery white! These are supreme foliage plants for accenting beds and edging in lacy, fine-textured sterling foliage!

Also known as Wormwood, these create mounding, cascading fillers and spillers anywhere you want to catch the eye! Soft and billowing clouds of long, delicately cut-leaf foliage are silvery sage-green! These pair incredibly well with blue and purple flowers, light pink blooms, or set off the contrast big time with bold Purple Smokebush, Black Beauty, or Black Lace Elderberry, and Pandora Ligularia.

Artemisia produces tiny yellow button-like flowers that are insignificant; it's best to pinch them off and encourage more of this divine silver foliage to keep forming until frost! Plus, these incredible plants have that classic Wormwood scent - sharp, medicinal, and herbal!

Planting and Application:

Makana™ Silver spills and tumbles over garden edges, pot sides, and looks lovely in hanging baskets! Try potting up into an elevated urn or hanging planter to take your garden to the next level! Or use these fringy plants to encircle a gazebo or sculpture! Great facer plants, a row of these in front of dark evergreens along your foundation to kick the curb appeal into overdrive!

Silver Artemisia stays a tidy size without taking up lots of garden space, acting as heavenly fillers and spillers in planters and mixed containers! Imagine a tall urn on either side of your driveway or the entrance of a path with these glorious fountains of silver! Cottage and Rock gardens, en masse and in rows along borders, look divine! Try creating a Moon Garden or add to a Sensory Garden because of its scent!
