The greatest of all apricot trees has arrived, and that's the Chinese Apricot Tree. Its flowers are too pretty and its aroma is too pleasant not to be recognized as anything but!

The Chinese Apricot Tree (Prunus armeniaca 'Chinese') is a cold hardy, beautiful tree that produces delectable fruit.

Being one of the prettiest edible fruiting trees, the Chinese Apricot Tree is sure to be a lovely addition to your yard. The branches reach upward, creating a gorgeous image all year round, not just early spring and summer!

During the spring, pink-hued, white flowers will appear to be sprinkled across the branches. The colors simply welcome people to the warmth of summer!

Followed by the flowers is the tasty fruit itself. The ripe yellow-orange fruits are sure to pop against the lush and green foliage.

The sweet mild flavor is sure to swoon every eater of the Chinese Apricot! They can be enjoyed in so many ways, too. This includes eating them fresh, canned, dried, or jammed for desserts. They're also freestone, making the fruit super easy to work with!

The tree itself is considered a semi-dwarf, so it stays a nice, manageable size. It's a great size for any landscape, yard, or orchard. Order your Chinese Apricot Tree Today!

How to Use The Chinese Apricot Tree In The Landscape

The best growing zones for the Chinese Apricot Tree are zones 5-9. They perform especially well in difficult climates that are prone to late spring frosts.

The Chinese Apricot Tree has a wonderful canopy shape, making it the perfect accent for your backyard. The flowers will be a joy to look at through the window during early spring.

This tree is also the ideal fit for your very own orchard. They need 8 - 10 feet of space from any building, other tree, wire, or pipes for optimal growing.

Use the Chinese Apricot Tree as a lining for your yard, or a privacy screen to cover unsightly views.

They're also perfect for providing that afternoon shade you need to read a good book, and potentially snacking on one of your fresh Chinese Apricots!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Caring for your tree is important, but very simple! The first step is planting, and our blog post here can tell you all about planting your fruit tree.

The Chinese Apricot Tree needs 700 hours of chilling in the winter for beautiful spring blooms.

As for soil, it is very adaptable to different soil types. The best soil for the Chinese Apricot Tree, though, is deep, fertile, moist, well-drained soils.

The Chinese Apricot Tree is Self Fertile, so they don't need a pollinator. However, they perform much better if they have pollinating partners nearby! This can help create plenty of bigger, heavy crops to fill your tree.

Place your tree in a full-sun location, since it loves to bask in the sunlight.

When it comes to watering your Chinese Apricot Trees, they are quite similar to other apricot trees. They don't necessarily need a particular watering schedule, but it is recommended during its first few growing seasons. This ensures the healthy growth and maturity of the tree!

To test if your Chinese Apricot Tree needs watered, use the finger test. Stick your pointer into the dirt near the base of your tree. If it feels dry, give your tree a drink. If it's still slightly damp, go ahead and skip for the day.

Pruning your tree should be regular so it can stay healthy and strong, all while providing delectable harvests. If you are unsure about pruning your tree, read our blog post here about pruning your fruit trees.

When pruning, cut off all dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This will ensure the beauty and quality of your Chinese Apricot Tree.

We recommend that you add a layer of mulch around the base of your tree. Start it an inch away from the trunk. Including this mulch will help conserve the water and protect your tree's roots.

This stellar, tasty tree is sure to be the prettiest on the block. Order your Chinese Apricot Tree today!

Apricot Tree Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for Chinese Apricot Trees to bear fruit?

Nature Hills Nursery sells fruit trees with mature root systems that are already three to four years old, so you’ll enjoy fruit sooner than you would with younger trees! Expect your young apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca 'Chinese') to begin fruiting usually by the 2nd-4th year after you plant them.

How Fast Do Chinese Apricot Trees Grow?

Once your apricot tree has been established (after the first year), it can typically add 12-18 inches of new growth in a growing season. If your plants are adding less than that in a season, it may be worth your while to check the fertility level.

Where do Chinese Apricot Trees Grow Best?

Apricot trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soil in at least 6 hours of full sun per day or more. Provide good air circulation and moderate, yet consistent water. They do need very well-drained soil.

Do You Need 2 Apricot Trees to Produce Fruit?

Many apricot trees are self-fertile, however planting more than one apricot tree that blooms at about the same time, boosts yields on both trees and extends your harvest time! The Chinese Apricot Tree is self-pollinating and doesn't need a pollinator to produce fruit.

Apricot trees that need a pollinator partner will have the appropriate tree(s) listed for you to choose from. Nature Hills Nursery lists pollinators for each tree on the product pages. This gives you must-have information right at your fingertips!

No room? Look into High-Density Planting techniques, or choose a semi-dwarf or dwarf fruit tree.

When Should Chinese Apricot Tree be Planted?

Bareroot apricot trees can be planted in spring when they are available in your area. Container-grown apricot trees can be very successfully transplanted all throughout the growing season. Check for first and last frost dates for your area with your local County Extension Office.

  • Plant bareroot apricot trees in the early spring.
  • Plant container-grown trees anytime the ground is not frozen by digging a hole as deep as the soil line and twice as wide.

The tree seemed quite healthy when it arrived. But we have to wait to see how it survives the winter. We planted it right away and it seems to have settled in.Ask me again later.

Dear Ruah,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Chinese apricot tree! We’re delighted to hear it arrived healthy and that it has settled in promptly after planting. Winter can indeed be a challenging season for young trees, so your attentive care will certainly make a positive difference.

To support your tree through the colder months, consider adding a layer of mulch around its base to protect roots from extreme temperature fluctuations, and, if extreme cold is expected, you might also look into burlap wraps or protective tree guards. Feel free to reach out when you have more updates or if you need any advice—winter care tips, pruning guidance, or anything else—
