Growing Zones 4 - 9
You'll love the hardy native American Filbert Tree (Corylus americana) for its many features! Unique foliage and tasty nuts, also known as Hazelnuts! Versatile for use as large shrubs, or pruned into an ornamental edible specimen tree.
The spring clusters of yellow-brown tasseled catkins appear and gently sway in the breeze as they pollinate the tiny female flowers. The dark green, heart-shaped leaves are pleated and serrated and look fantastic all growing season long! Autumn temperatures bring on a drastic change as fall colors range from vivid orange, mellow golds, and yellows and even deepen into rich wine-reds!
In addition to the fall color, you'll notice green clustered capsules of egg-shaped nuts that are surrounded by shaggy green bracts that turn brown when ripe. The bird-friendly nuts are favorites of squirrels, and groundbirds among other wildlife when they ripen late in the season (September to October)! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, these shrubby trees grow 10-15 feet in height and a bit smaller in width at maturity.
Planting and Application:
Filbert Trees are larger natives that are ideal for unique lawn trees, and small-scale shade. Groupings and rows of these deciduous plants in their shrubby forms are perfect for naturalizing areas, as windbreaks, and as privacy hedgerows. These lovely freeform screenings with tasty benefits!
Use Filberts in Rain Garden settings or riparian buffers along stream beds, and woodland borders. Naturally thicket-forming and dense roots make Filberts ideal for erosion control and steep slopes! You'll enjoy them among your Nut Tree groves! Use the nuts raw, in baking, roasted, or ground into your own chocolaty nut spread!
If you don't get to them first, Hazelnuts provide food and the branching provides cover for songbirds and wildlife that feast on the catkins and nuts. Plant a hedgerow or shelterbelt for wildlife habitat, cover, food, and nesting sites!
- Pretty Foliage, Catkins & Edible Nuts

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Filbert Trees are adaptable to full sun and partial shade, wet or dry conditions, and have outstanding ease of care and adaptability. For the driest zones, provide your tree protection from the afternoon sun and supplemental water in extended periods of drought. A 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch helps keep the roots cool and moist.
Prune these trees into multi-branched shrubs or trees, or train them into single-stem specimens after they've finished flowering. You can also renewal prune which involves removing the older thicker branches down to the ground every couple of years - leaving the younger, thinner branches in place to flower and fruit. Removing the older, less productive branches keeps the plants healthier and more vigorous.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Cold Hardy In Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate to Higher Moisture
- Prune After Flowering
- Eastern Filbert Blight & Disease Resistant
