A rare hybrid New Zealand Hop, the AlphAroma Hops Plant (Humulus lupulus 'AlphAroma') originated in the 1970s but was not commercially released until about 1983. The unique oil balance and medium alpha acid content make AlphAroma a dual-purpose Hop! Put these characteristics to good use by adding to Pale Ales and Lagers to add a firm bitterness as well as a citrusy, fruity aroma.
Also known as Rakau, this plant features beautiful foliage and sprays of greenish flowers that the pollinators adore! Harvest, dry, and bag your Hops cones for cold storage as the sticky cones reach ripeness and spring back after a gentle squeeze.
Considered a high alpha aroma variety with an acidity content of 5.8-10.9%, AlphAroma is a late-season ripening Hops variety that grows fast to about 15-20 feet in height and only spreads about 3-6 feet wide. Self-fertile, you'll get a large harvest of mid-sized cones for all your home-brewing needs! But consider planting more than one for a higher yield per plant and increased pollination.
Planting and Application:
AlphAroma Hop plants need sturdy support, so train them on a trellis, or tall poles set in concrete footings. String sturdy twine from the top of your pole to a stake at ground level. People have a good time designing their ""Hop farms""...let your creativity come out in the home landscape. The scaled, pinecone-like fruits are a lovely light green and add their own ornamental appeal to your fall landscape!
Try creating a Tipi tent for the kids, or cover the barbecue or an outdoor seating area for shade, or use it as a narrow vertical ""garden wall"" to define outdoor rooms. Let Hops climb up a lattice support for privacy and screening around an outdoor bistro nook or reading chair! You'll enjoy pollinators and shade all growing season long!
Edible landscaping is huge these days...and no wonder. All across the United States, people are waking up to the fact that homegrown good tastes amazing and grants a blissful feeling of security. Create an ornamental enclosure for your Victory Garden with these dual-purpose fruiting plants. You can even use these curious cones in your fresh or dried arrangements and wreaths!
- Showy Light Green Scaled Cones
- Dark Green Lush Foliage

- Very Aromatic & Fruity
- Ornamental Bines & Pollinator Friendly!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Easy to grow from hardy perennial rhizomes, Hops bines are not vines, but do have short thorns to help with grabbing and clinging, but will need your help to climb. Train the tendrils several times throughout the growing season to reach new heights as they grow. Bines grow clockwise around their support, so check them regularly and lend a hand when needed.
Hops require full sun and soil that drains quickly after rain. If you need to improve the rate of drainage, elevate your planting with additional sandy loam. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular schedule. 3-4 inches of arborist mulch helps maintain the proper temperature and improves the soil quality over time.
Good Hops culture is designed to provide plenty of air circulation around each plant. Remove leaves from the lower few feet once the plant is 10 feet tall, and consider protective early treatments if powdery mildew is prevalent in your area. Boasting a disease-free growth habit, this plant is deer and pest-resistant!
