Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Rejoice in the new growing season with this lively choice! National Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa 'National') is one of the earliest Dogwoods to start blooming each year! Custom fit these upright white flowering trees to your landscape with a bit of strategic pruning. Graceful National Kousa Flowering Dogwood works to elevate the tone of your landscape all year!

You'll want to study the exquisite rounded, creamy-white bracts that float above the branches and give National's flowering such a unique look. Snip a few small branches for clean, spare indoor flower arrangements. Accept all the compliments on your effortlessly elegant tablescape. There will be plenty of tiny, light green, true blooms left over to provide valuable nectar. Dogwoods are magnets for bees and butterflies and other helpful pollinators.

As nighttime temperatures dip in the autumn, the pointed leaves turn a pretty mix of crimson, burgundy, and fiery bright red for superior fall foliage. Look closely for the red raspberry-shaped berries before local songbirds take them for a nutrient-rich snack!

Even in winter, the bare branches and vase-shaped habit deliver an outstanding architectural accent. Hardy and adaptable throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9, forming a large, rounded 20-25 feet tall and wide canopy!

Planting and Application:

Gorgeous National Kousa Dogwood gives you multiple seasons of interest. Run a series of these deciduous trees as a large-scale screen at your property line or along your driveway for a fantastic garden feature! Add one if space is limited...or include several in a wonderfully naturalistic grouping on larger properties! The National Kousa Dogwood easily anchors a lawn planting.

Give them a high-profile location. There is perhaps no better tree to reflect at the far end of a pond. Rippling water only adds to the beauty of these trees with their textured gray bark and drooping, dark green leaves. Uplight your National Kousa with exterior lighting to make the most of this structural specimen.

Perfect in the Zen garden, a Moon Garden, or as a prominent shade and accent tree by your backyard seating areas and BBQ pit! Anyplace you like to bird watch or pollinator spot, this tree is ideal for attracting both throughout the year!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Kousa Dogwood Trees are incredibly versatile when planted properly in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Give your tree the extra treatment it deserves by planting a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree to ensure even moisture, not to mention the difference it can make on the overall physical appearance of your landscaping. Prune Dogwood to shape when dormant, and remove water growth or suckers after flowering. Decide what you want to keep first, then remove crossed branches and branches heading into the interior of the canopy to open it up for sunlight penetration and air circulation.

  • Full Sun & Partial/Afternoon Shade
  • Needs Well-Drained Acidic Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Disease Resistant & Cold Hardy Kousa Variety

Discerning property owners can add real value with this disease-resistant, vigorous choice. Place your order for your own National Kousa Flowering Dogwood today at Nature Hills!
