Amazingly showy clouds of white stars! You know that Dogwood Trees are known for their showy spring flowers, but you have no idea the flower power they are capable of until you see a Milky Way Dogwood Tree (Cornus kousa var. chinensis 'Milky Way') in full bloom! These hybrids take the best of both US and Japanese natives and show them off to absolute perfection!

Milky Way has more flowers, more fruit, and more vigor than any other Dogwood variety on the market! These make perfect yard trees in the US and you won't believe the amount of attention they bring every spring and extending through into the early summer! The horizontal drifts of pointed bracts create clouds of stars, almost rivaling the heavens in number! Forming on the tops of each heavily-laden branch, the display is incredible to behold!

Every spring, the Milky Way flowering Dogwood tree covers itself in snow-white blossoms after the leaves bud out making the tree look like a frothy confection for over a month! The leaves are great shade casters in the summer and turn pretty fall colors every autumn, but oh, those blooms in the spring! We're sure every pollinator in the area will have to stop by and catch their breath!

Dramatic red berries mature in summer and replace the flowers. These berries are exceptionally large and edible, having a custard-like consistency in the centers. If you don't wish to make jam or baked goods from these unusual summer fruits, then we're sure your songbirds and wildlife will gladly help you! The red fruit is highlighted by the gorgeous orange and red fall color that will cloak your tree once the weather turns chilly!

Milky Way is a smaller, more compact flowering ornamental, growing just 15 - 20 feet in height and width throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8. Winter brings exfoliating, mottled, tan, and gray bark that adds interest to the landscape. One of the more cold-hardy selections, this Hybrid Dogwood is highly adaptable and resistant to common Dogwood issues!

Planting and Application:

These are perfect specimen lawn tree by themselves and are sure to set your home apart from all the rest! Their compact size means enjoying more than one because you can never have too many Milky Way Kousa Dogwoods in your yard! Raise a focal point planting onto a berm, or highlight your foundation planting of Renaissance Spirea and fluffy white Peony, and underplanted in frothy white Astilbe and drifts of white Creeping Phlox!

A row along your driveway will make you feel like you're entering Wonderland! Try them in groups for a show-stopping woodland garden. These stunning trees look great as street trees, a patio tree making conversation around your seating areas, or even in extra-large pots. Use in combination with Hydrangeas, Viburnums, and Rhododendrons for wildlife-friendly hedges, groupings, or mixed privacy borders!

Plant in a romantic Rose Garden with flouncy Climbing Roses and Clematis, or create a peaceful outdoor garden room that inspires Zen in an Asian-Inspired water or sand garden where you can meditate and relax!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

The Milky Way Dogwood tree is great in a sunny or semi-shady spot. Dogwood Trees prefer enriched, deep, well-drained organic, and slightly-acidic soil and are not recommended for heavy, wet soils. Dogwoods are somewhat susceptible to drought, so be sure that sufficient water is provided during dry periods. They love having their root systems covered with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to keep the root system evenly moist and cooler.

Prune Dogwood to shape when dormant, and remove water growth or suckers after flowering. Decide what you want to keep first, then remove crossed branches and branches heading into the interior of the canopy to open it up for sunlight penetration and air circulation.

Another great thing about this Kousa hybrid is that it shows better resistance to disease better than other Flowering Dogwoods!

  • Full Sun & Partial/Afternoon Shade
  • Needs Well-Drained Acidic Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Kousa Hybrid Shows Resistance to Anthracnose & Powdery Mildew

Milky Way Dogwood has a huge US range and will do well in most gardens. Buy now to have stunning blooms in the spring! As soon as this incredible beauty is back in stock, be sure to grab yours before they're gone at Nature Hills!
