Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Wait until you see the whites of their edges! Minuteman Hosta (Hosta 'Minuteman') is a new variety that really starts a revolution in the garden! Minuteman is a sport from the Francee Hosta and an improvement over the very popular Patriot Hosta. However, the white margin does not go as deep into the leaf as it does with these other fantastic varieties!

Featuring a bold, creamy white margin on thick dark green leaves, this Hosta is a real knockout! Slender scapes full of lavender trumpet-shaped blossoms appear in mid-summer and call their own reinforcements to the area in the way of bees, butterflies, native pollinators, and hummingbirds! You'll love tucking a few of these blossoms into cut flower arrangements too!

Cold-hardy and heat-resistant, Loyalist works throughout a wide swath of USDA growing zones 3 to 9! Staying small and tidy, Hosta forms neat fountain-like mounds that are impressively easy to grow for even the most novice or busiest gardeners!

Planting and Application:

This is a low-care perennial and is ideal for shady positions and is one of the most popular for landscapes. This low-care nature makes them ideal for large swaths of ground-covering mass plantings, long winding rows along the edges of a fenceline or garden bed and border, as fringe along paths and shady driveways, or in large groupings throughout the bed or border!

Use this low-care perennial in dappled and understory settings, as edging plants, foundation plantings, or in large garden planters. Minuteman offers effortless style for many years, making it a favorite for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Create your own shade-loving perennial display with Ferns, Astilbe, Coral Bells, and of course other Hosta! Create a patriotic garden by including Hostas like Loyalist, Patriot, and Liberty Hostas! Toss in a few blue-green Yankee Hostas and some lovely Fireworks Hostas for a unique Hosta collection around a flag pole!

Underplant your flowering ornamental trees with this outstanding shade garden workhorse! Add Minuteman Hostas' bold foliage skirts around your favorite urn, arbor, garden bench, or a shrub that may be a bit leggy. Use as facer plants along the shady side of an evergreen hedge or your foundation shrubs for a clean transition between lawn and garden!

  • Thick Dark Green Leaves with White Edging
  • Lavender Blooms on Slender Tall Stems
  • Hummingbird & Pollinator-Friendly
  • Smaller Neat & Tidy Size
  • Shade Gardens, Beds & Borders, Edging & Containers!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This low-care herbaceous Perennial is ideal for shady positions. High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth. The morning sun is tolerable and will help to intensify the leaf colors, but the hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to Hostas. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Add a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch to the soil surface, especially in dry shade conditions.

Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the cold, it's time to prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. It is best to keep areas around Hostas clear of excess leaf debris to reduce the presence of slugs and snails.

  • Full Shade Perennial Also Tolerates Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Low-Maintenance & Remarkably Easy Care
  • Deadhead After Flowering
  • Prune Late Fall
  • Thicker Waxy Leaves Resist Slugs

Arm your garden with easy-care plants that are made in the shade! Plant your own militia of reliable perennial plants for your shade gardens and order the Minuteman Hosta from Nature Hills today!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
