Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Texture, color, and form, Expect great things from this exceptional Hosta! This is a superlative choice to grace your shaded glens and add bright visual interest underneath mature trees. Garden designers count on standout selections to play the starring role to delight their clients. Great Expectations Hosta (Hosta sieboldiana 'Great Expectations') has earned a reputation as a major player!

Follow their lead by including one or several in your special Hosta collection. They'll perform beautifully, although they will take some time to develop into their full glory. Great Expectations adds a bold look with exquisite, heart-shaped leaves that are both puckered and held stiffly. These thick leaves are held erect and generate a sense of anticipation when garden visitors view them.

This showy promise is realized with the unique foliage coloration. Each leaf is a performance, with a set stage of creamy-gold centers that lighten to white with sunlight; and broadly irregular margins. Try the leaves in cut flower arrangements as a spectacular filler. Even a single leaf makes an elegant statement on a modern tablescape. Bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers add a midsummer decorator touch...along with butterflies and Hummingbirds. They are held high on long, slender scapes that can reach two feet in length.

Planting and Application:

Plant a grouping of Great Expectations Hosta to enliven woodland settings. Or, plant a specimen in a large container to baby on your balcony. Ensure Great Expectations Hosta is grown in an area that receives low light. The leaves do well with some morning sun to bring out the rich colors...but too much sun will burn the leaves.

Pair Great Expectations Hosta with Hardy Ferns, Astilbe, Bleeding Hearts, and Heucheras. Choose your favorites from our vast collection of shade perennials and turn a dreary corner into a fabulous feature. Hostas require little care in shady positions, in the ground, in large planters, or in covered patio pots. This popular landscape plant is a great choice for both beginners and experienced gardeners!

Pollinator gardens and wilderness plantings, Great Expectations lights up your Perennial gardens, shaded pathways, and border gardens. Use as groundcover between larger shade plants, as edging along garden edges, and as skirting around larger shrubs and trees where Hosta can bask in their shade.

  • Spectacular, Powdery Blue-Toned Foliage & Feature Ruffled Edges
  • Fragrant Lavender Flowers Held on Tall Spires
  • Spreads to Become Showy, Low Mound
  • Attracts Hummingbirds & Pollinators
  • Enchanting in Containers, Beds, Borders & Specimen Plantings

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Thriving in full shade in hot climates and partial shade in other growing zones, these leaves can burn in full sun settings. Highly resistant to heat and humidity long as they're given adequate shade and moisture, especially throughout the hottest part of the growing season. Tolerant of dry shade once established, these become incredibly resilient perennials! Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soils that are highly organic. Preferring a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Give them room to reach their full spread, and be sure to use Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for life-long symbiotic support of the tiny feeder roots.

Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues!

  • Hardy & Versatile Shade Lover
  • Widely Adaptable - Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Moisture Loving Plant
  • Easy-Care Perennial & Resists Slugs & Pests
  • Slow Growing Cultivar is Worth the Wait

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
