Marquette Grape: The Cold-Hardy Winemaker's Delight

The Marquette Grape (Vitis vinifera 'Marquette') is a beloved Red Wine Grape variety! Introduced in 2006 by the University of Minnesota, Marquette is renowned for producing medium-bodied, dry red wines!

With a flavor described as having notes of cherry, berry, black pepper, and spice! Marquette has become a favorite among northern winemakers because of its ability to handle winter temperatures as low as -36° F without serious injury.

Cold-hardy, disease-resistant, and easy to grow, the open upright growth habit of Marquette is considered highly desirable for efficient vineyard management, and fruit exposure to the sun conducive to maximizing wine quality.

  • Cold-Hardiness: Thriving down to -36° F
  • Disease-Resistance: Resistance to common Grape diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and black rot.
  • Versatile Wine Grape: Red Wine, Jam, Jelly, and Juice

Grapevine Landscaping Use

Marquette Grapevines are not only functional for wine production but also add aesthetic value to landscapes! Grapes are primarily grown for fruit production in home orchards, where they provide ornamental value.

Their vigorous growth and attractive foliage make them suitable for trellises, arbors, or pergolas, providing both shade and visual appeal.

In late September, the deep purple grape clusters enhance the garden's beauty, making Marquette an excellent choice for edible landscaping!

  • Train up a pergola, arbor, trellis, or other sturdy structure
  • Provides shade and privacy to your garden
  • Create ornamental living walls around seating areas

Grapevine Care and Training

  • Support: Provide sturdy structures like trellises or arbors to support the vigorous vines.
  • Pruning: Conduct annual pruning during dormancy to maintain vine health and maximize yield.
  • Disease Management: While Marquette is bred for disease resistance, including slight susceptibility to black rot, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and botrytis, regular monitoring and proper air circulation can help prevent potential issues.
