Black tie attire for your garden, the miniature Tall Bearded Iris is perfect for small yards that need the drama and allure of an elegant Iris. The Frosted Velvet Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Frosted Velvet') has all the strength and beauty of a full-sized Bearded Iris, but the Frosted Velvet Tall Bearded Iris is about two-thirds of the size!
This Iris features dramatically dark royal purple falls with white veins and edges, elegant white standards, and creamy yellow beards. With strong stems and ample blooms, this variety is prized for its contrasting dark purple and white blooms! The fuzzy 'beards' are lush landing pads for Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies!
The Frosted Velvet Iris offers the striking coloration and unique shape of an orchid without temperamental care and larger blooms. With late spring flowers, you'll look forward to these blossoms each year for their fragrance and bold color combo! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 9, miniature Bearded Iris grow just 1-2 feet in height and width.
Planting and Application:
To make the most of your Frosted Velvet Bearded Iris, you want to plant it where all the neighbors can admire it (or rather be green with jealousy). Plant a ring of these showy beauties around your mailbox or birdbath or as a showy edging along the front of a raised berm. This pollinator-friendly plant may look like it's dressed for a formal occasion, but it doesn't require the upkeep of a high-maintenance plant.
If you want to keep Frosted Velvet closer, plant several in a container by your front door or garage as a feature specimen planting, or as part of a mixed planters where the foliage can act as a vertical element once the flowers fade. You can even keep this velvety secret to yourself in a container on your patio or by your pool.
Miniature Iris are perfect for small flower arrangements, and perennial borders, showing off their unique coloration among your sunny Cottage gardens and rugged enough for Rock Gardens! Turning any landscape bed into a pollinator and cutting garden!
Small enough for gardens of all sizes, you can use this powerful color combo in large or small space plantings, long front-of-the-garden accents, or bold pops of spring color! This marvelous Iris adds grandeur to compact spaces without a grand amount of work. This petite iris will thrive while leaving you plenty of time to sit and admire its ravishing blooms.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Frosted Velvet Bearded Irises need full sun which encourages the best and most abundant blooms, but handle some afternoon shade, and likes planted in fast-draining soil of most types. Mulch this iris once the ground freezes and prune back in late fall. When you first plant these rhizomes, make sure you water them well, that way, they can create deep, strong roots in preparation for the frost. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their roots, especially Iris rhizomes prefer only to be partially covered.
Prune your Iris foliage back in late fall near the ground and cover it with an additional layer of mulch. The German Iris will be ready to divide and thin after about two to three years. You don't have to worry about rabbits or deer munching on them either.
Information About Bare Root Iris
Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots When you plant your Tall Bearded Iris rhizome, mound up soil and leave the top 1/3rd of the rhizome exposed.
Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover in the spring. Water well for the first year. Irises are best planted from late summer into fall.
